To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES SCHIFFL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vest Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Phonograph- Horn Supports, of which the following is a description.

My invention relates to means for supporting the amplifying horn used in connection with phonographs in which the reproducer or recorder is carried by a traveling carriage.

In using the phonograph for dictation purposes, it is especially desirable to provide the same with a properly supported horn in order that the person dictating may have free use of both hands, and it is also desirable that such a horn be supported by means which can readily be attached to or detached from the phonograph, and which will permit the horn to be moved laterally or adjusted vertically for the convenience of the person dictating.

My invention has for its object the provision of a support having these characteristics, and consists in the features hereinafter set forth in the claim, the invention residing particularly in improved means for looking or binding the horn supporting member in any desired position, and releasing the same from its locking engagement by a simple manipulative member.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which the same reference characters are used throughout to denote corresponding part-s, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a phonograph provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the means for supporting and holding the horn supporting member or rod, the latter and the means for releasing the same being shown in side elevation, and Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings, the rod 1 is preferably formed with a loop 2 at its upper end, through which the horn 3 is inserted, and in which it is supported, the horn being connected as shown at 4 to the phonograph 5. The lower end of the rod 1 extends through the socket member 6 which is secured to the frame 7 of the phonograph in any convenient way, preferably Specification of Letters Patent.

in such a manner as to be readily detachable therefrom. As I have shown the same in the drawings, the member 8 is provided attached to the top of the socket member 6 and having vertical members 9 integral with the same, the members 9 being adapted to be slipped one on the inside and one on the outside of the front member 7 of the phonograph over the top of the same, the socket member being formed with a foot 10 which abuts the outside of member 7 of the phonograph, this means of detachably mounting the socket member 6 not being my invention. But, as is obvious, the socket member (3 may be secured to the frame of the phonograph by means of a bracket screwed to the frame, or by the use of a bolt extending through the member 7, or similar means.

The socket member 6 is provided with a bore of slightly larger diameter than the rod 1 which extends therethrough, and with a socket or chamber 11 of enlarged diameter. In this chamber is placed the spiral spring 12 surrounding the rod 1 and having its upper end pressing in contact with the upper shouldered wall of the socket 11. The socket 11 is provided toward its lower end with the slit or opening 13 extending through the wall of the socket and preferably cut at an angle as indicated. Through this slot extends the clamping member 14 which rests pivotally on the lower edge of the slot 13, and is formed with a part extending at a large angle to the socket member 6 and capable of being pressed or grasped with the fingers on the outer end thereof. The member 14 is provided with a circular opening 15 of slightly greater diameter than the rod 1 and through which the rod 1 extends. The lower end of spiral spring 12 rests in contact with the upper surface of the inner end of member 14, whereby the member 14 is moved upon its pivot on the lower edge of slit 13, the spring 12 pressing on the periphery of the opening 15 of the member 14 adjacent to the phonograph with greater force than on the periphery of the same on the side distant from the phonograph, whereby the member 14 is given an angular position, and the opening 15 in the said member is caused to bind or look the rod 1 which passes through the same as indicated. To release this locking or Wedging engagement, it is only necessary to depress the outer end of member 14: until the walls of the opening 15 become parallel with the rod 1, the spring 1.2 being compressed by this movement and the rod 1 released to be freely movable vertically or to rotate. The wire or member 16 may be inserted through a suitable opening in the lower end of rod 1, if desired, to stop the upward movement of the same at a desired point.

Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is as follows:

In a horn support, the combination of a member formed with a counterbored socket having a shoulder therein and also formed with a lateral opening extending through the wall of said member into the counterbored portion of said socket, a horn-supporting rod inserted in said socket, a clamp having a finger piece extending out through said opening at a considerable angle to said member, said clamp being fulcrumed on the edge of said opening and having a passageway therein through which said rod extends, said rod being freely movable through said passageway when said clamp is positioned at one angle thereto and bound or wedged in said passageway when said clamp is positioned at another angle thereto, a spiral spring surrounding said rod within the counterbored portion of said socket and bearing at its ends against said shoulder and against said clamp for pressing the latter into binding position, substantially as described.
