. JOURNAL-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented.V Feb. 13, 191.2.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, WENDELL R. Buss and NICHOLAS YONKMAN, citizens of the United States of America, residing, respectively, at Grand Rapids, county of Kent, and State of Michigan, and at Holland, county of Ottawa, and State aforesaid, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J ournal-Boxes; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in journal boxes and its object is to provide the same with improved meansA for tightening and holding the cap of the same and to provide the same with various new and useful features hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a journal box embodying the invention with one outer nut and washer removed; Fig. 2 an end elevation of the same; Fig. 3 a longitudinal vertical section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 a transverse vertical sect-ion of the same on the line 4 4 of Fig. l; and Fig. 5 a perspective detail of a wedge block.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
l represents the lower part of the journal box; 2 upwardly projecting parallel walls at opposite sides of the box having outwardly and downwardly inclined portions 7 to engage the wedge blocks; 3 a cap vertically slidable between said walls and engaging the inner surfaces of the walls 2. v
4 are bolts extending through openings in the upper part of the side walls 2, said bolts preferably extending continuously through both of the walls 2 and the upper part of the cap 3. On each bolt are inner and outer nuts the outer nuts when tightened serve to clamp the walls 2 against the sides of the box and the inner nuts engage and clamp the wedge blocks 5, the outer surfaces of which are inclined outward and downward and engage the correspondingly inclined portions 7 in the inner sides of the walls 2. These wedge blocks have elongated slots to receive the bolts 4 and are securely jammed against the inclined surfaces of the portions 7 by the inner nuts on the said bolts. These wedge blocks are recessed int-o the upper part of the cap 3 and securely hold the same from rising. By the clamping action of the walls 2 forced against the opposite sides of the cap 3, and the securely held wedge blocks 5, the cap is held from rising under the most severe conditions of service such as for the journals of planer cylinders and like machinery subject to high speed and vibrations.
Vhat we claim is l. A journal box having vertical parallel walls extending upward from the lower half of the box and oppositely inclined inner portions, a cap vertically adjustable between said walls, wedge blocks engaging the cap and having inclinedfaces engaging the inclined portions of the walls and bolts extending through the walls and wedge blocks and clamping the same to each other.
2. A journal box, comprising a lower part, upwardly extended parallel walls integral therewith having downwardly and outwardly inclined inner portions, a cap vertically adjustable between said walls and clamped thereby, wedge blocks having elongated openings to receive bolts and inclined surfaces engagingy the inclined portions of walls, bolts extending through the upper part of the walls and the opening of the wedge blocks and nuts on the 'bolts oppositely engaging the walls and blocks.
3. A journal box, comprising a fixed lower part, upwardly extended parallel walls integral therewith, a cap vertically adjustable between said walls, said walls having downwardly and outwardly inclined portions on the inner side, wedge blocks each having one vertical and one inclined side and bolts extending through openings in the walls through said wedge blocks to clamp the in clined surface of the same against each other.
4. A journal box, comprising a fixed lower part having at its respective sides upwardly extended parallel walls, a cap vertically adjustable between said walls and oppositely engaged thereby, wedge blocks having elongated openings and recessed into t-he cap, the said walls and wedge blocks also having engag-ing downwardly and outwardly inclined In testimony whereof, we affix our signasurfaces, bolts extendingthrough said walls tures in the presence of two witnesses. and blocks, outer nuts on the bolts engag- VVENDELL R BUSS ing the outer surfaces of the walls to clamp NICHOLAS YONKMAN the same against the oap and inner nuts on the bolts adapted to clamp the inclined sur- Vt-nesses: faces of the wedge blocks against the in- O'rtro P.
