SAW-CLAMP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER A. Sni- BERT, citizen of the United States, residing at Sandyville, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw- Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in saw clamps and has for an object to pro vide an efficient clamp for rigidly supporting saws during the filing of the same, and for binding the saw at various points throughout its length, irrespective of any variation in the thickness of the saw.
The invention has for another object the provision of a clamp which is formed of comparatively few parts which are arranged in detachable relation, and are so formed that when assembled they produce a strong and durable clamp adaptable for general usage.
The invention essentially comprises a clamp including a plurality of looking members, having independent set-screws for operating the same so as to obtain considerable leverage upon the jaw which is operated thereby.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which V Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved saw clamp disclosing in dotted lines a saw positioned therein. Fig. 2 is a section through one end of the clamp disclosing the end bracket. Fig. 3 is a section through the central portion of the clamp disclosing one of the inner brackets. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through one of the central brackets, disclosing the outer arm of the same.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 10 designates a work-table, or other suitable support upon the edge of which the improved clamp is mounted. The clamp coniprises inner brackets 11 and end-brackets 12. The brackets are arranged in spaced parallel relation on the edge of the worktable 10 and project slightly above the upper surface thereof. vided at its rear edge and adjacent its opposite ends with pairs of outwardly extending ears 13. The ears 13 bear against the side of the table 10 and are suitably apertured for the reception of screws 14, or the like. The inner or rear edge of the bracket 11 is further provided with a finger 15 having a flattened under face which projects inwardly from a point immediately above the upper ears 13 so as to rest upon the upper face of the table 10. The inner arm of the bracket 11 extends upwardly above the finger 15 and is reduced to form a stud 16 and a shoulder 17. The shoulder 17 is formed in the outer edge of the arm and provides a seat for the detachable inner jaw 18. The end-brackets 12 are provided at their inner edges with ears 19 which bear against the outer face of the work-table l0 and are suitably apertured to receive screws, or the like, the brackets 12 being further retained in position by the inwardly projecting fingers 20. The inner arm of each of the brackets 12 extends upwardly beyond the finger 20 and is offsetinwardly to provide a stud 21 and a shoulder 22. The shoulder 22, in this instance, is formed upon the inner edge of the inner arm and provides a seat for the jaw 18.
From Figs. 2 and 3 it will be observed that the opening 23 in the bracket 11 is of a size suflicient only to receive the saw blade, while the opening 24 in the bracket 12 is enlarged to receive the handle of the saw. The outer arm of the bracket 11 terminates below the upper end of the inner arm and is slightly reduced as at 25 to engage in a recess 26 formed in the inner edge of a looking lever 27. A pivot pin 28 passes through the lever 27 and the reduced portion 25. The upper or short arm of the lever 27 is reduced at its extremity to form a stud having a shoulder 31 to receive the jaw 30 and to hold the same from downward movement. The lower end of the long arm of the lever 27 is reduced in thickness and extends downwardly against the outer edge of the outer arm of the bracket 11. A setscrew 32 passes through the lower end of the lever 27 and abuts at its inner end the edge of the bracket 11. The end-brackets 12 are each provided with a lever 33 similar in construct-ion to the lever 27 with the exception that the upper or short arm thereof is offset inwardly to form a stud 34 and a shoulder 35 corresponding to the stud 21 and shoulder 22. The studs 21 and 34 are offset inwardly to register with the openings in the jaws 18 and 30 respectively.
The jaws 18 and 30 each' comprise a length of metal provided at intervals with registered. enlargements 36 having apertures 37 extending therethrough. The enlargements 36 register with the studs of the respective brackets 11 and 12 and serve to receive said studs. The inner enlargements 36, or the enlargements which register with the inner brackets 11 are provided with setscrews 38 to engage at their inner ends the outer faces of the studs 16 and 29 in order to secure the jaws 18 and 30 in position. The jaws 18 and 30 extend a short distance beyond the end-brackets 12 and are reduced,
Y or otherwise suitably formed to present rounded or beveled edges. The pivot pins 28 are preferably in the form of bolts having clamping nuts whereby the levers 27 and 33 may be quickly detached from their respective brackets.
The outer end of the clamp is provided With a support to hold the handle of the saw when positioning the same within the clamp. The support comprises an arm 39 which projects longitudinally from one of the end-brackets 12 and carries depending lugs 40 for detachable and frictional engagement with the lower end of the adjacent bracket 12. The outer end of the arm 39 is slightly enlarged and is vertically apertured to snugly receive a rest 11. The rest 41 is disclosed as being formed of a length of wire which is looped at its upper end, and flattened to provide an arcuate bearing surface 42 adapted to receive the rounded edge of the saw handle. A setsorew 13 is positioned in the outer end of the arm 39 for engagement with the rest 41 thereby to secure said rest in adjusted position.
In operation, the saw is inserted between the jaws 18 and 30 and the rest 41 adjusted to support the inner end of the saw with the teeth thereof projecting a slight distance above the jaws. The opposite end of the saw is then held by the hand at the desired adjustment, while the set-screws are operated to swing the upper ends of the levers 27 and 33 inwardly to thereby force the outer jaw 30 against the saw. whereby the jaw 30 is carried with considerable force into engagement with the saw.
It can be readily seen that two or more of the brackets only may be employed and that the jaws 18 and 30 may be of any clesired length to provide saw clamps for saws of various lengths.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. The combination with a saw clamp including a supporting bracket having spaced upstanding members adapted to embrace a saw, of an arm extending laterally from the bracket and provided with spaced depending lugs engaging the opposite walls of said bracket between the upstanding members thereof, a support mounted for vertical movementin the free end of the arm and having its upper end provided with a seat for the saw handle, and means extending through the arm and engaging the ad acent end of the support for holding the latter in different positions of vertical adjustment.
2. A saw clamp including a substantially U-shaped bracket having arms of different lengths, the long arm of said bracket being provided with laterally extending ears for attachment to a support and having its upper end reduced to form a vertically disposed stud defining an inwardly extending shoulder, a clamping member having its intermediate portion pivotally mounted. on the short arm of the bracket and having its upper end reduced to form a stud defining an inwardly extending shoulder arranged diametrically opposite the shoulder on the long arm, relatively stationary and movable clamping jaws having openings formed therein for the reception of the studs of the long arm of the bracket and clamping member, respectively, and having their lower faces resting on the adjacent shoulders and their upper faces disposed flush with the free ends of said studs, and means extending through the lower end of the clamping member and engaging the adjacent face of the short arm of the bracket for forcing the movable clamping jaw into engagement with a saw.
