Description

R. PATON. UALK ATTAGHMBNT FOR HORSESHOES APPLIGATION FILED 0013.6. 1911.
1,016,708. Paqented Feb. 6, 1912.
ATTORNEYS ZATENT orsion ROBERT PATON, F CYNWYD, PENNSYLVANIA.
.CALK ATTACHMENT FOR HORSESHOES.
zen .of' the United States, residing at strnction. into which 2 represents a corresponding Cyn'wyd, Montgomery county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Call: Attachinentfor Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates. to detachable calk attachments tor horseshoes, and it consists of improved means -forclamping the adjust able frame carrying the calks, to the shoe.
It further consists of improved means for adjustably clampingthe heels or quarters of the shoe.
It further consists of improved'means for simultaneonsly moving the clamping members of the device.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth;
The annexed drawings and thefollowing descriptionset forth indetail, one mechani'- cal form embodying the invention; such detail construction being but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of used.
the invention may he In said annexed drawings :Figure 1 represents,- a perspective view, seen from the undersideof a horseshoe and my improved call: attachment applied to the'same. Fig.
' bottom plan. view of parts of the attachment. Fig. 3 represents a detail view of one of the heel-clamps" Similar numerals of reference indicate parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a horseshoe ofthe ordinary con- The attachment has a plate, 2,- a toe-calk, 3, is secured, and said plate has upwardly and rearwardlyprojecting, inclined toe-clips, l, which-engage the the of the shoe and of the horses hoof. The
plate has two rearwardly extendi g arms, 5, connected at their rear ends by t bridgepiece, 6, which is formed with a longitudinal, screwthreaded bore, 7. One portion, 8, of a right and left screw, 9, fits to turn in said bore and has a nut, 10, threaded upon it to serve as a lock-nut. The rear and oppositely screwthreaded en 11, of said screw is threaded into a threaded bore, 12, of a yoke, 13,. and the flattened and perforated ends lt, of two screw-arm's, 15, are pi-v-- otally connected" to .the ends of the yoke upon pins, 16, and have clips, 17, upon their Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed October 6, 1911.
' so that it may have suiiicient Serial No.v 653,184.
HeeLcalks, 18, are secured in said clips. ,The.clips extend upward to en gage the edges of the heels or quarters of the horseshoe. A washer, l9, anda nut, 20, fit upon each screw-arm to havethe washer bear againstthe inner edge of the heel or quarter. of the shoe, and the nut serves to clampthe washer shoe which is thus clam ed between the Washer and the upturned. l1p,'2l, of the clip.
he opening, 22, in the washer is of a somewhat greater diameter than the screw-arm, play to find a square seat against the edge of the shoe. The screw has a polygonal end, 23, for the application of a key or wrench for turn-. ing it; s When the device is to he attaehed'to horseshoe, the screw is rotated its forward end from the bridge-piece of the forward plate and to force the yoke to outer ends.
which the screw-arms are pivots-Q, re: .ward,
and shoe of a horse, the clips will'be at the. shoe and, by rotating the outside of said I right and left-screw, the bridge-piece and plate and the yoke will be drawn together, drawing the clips in upon the outer edges of the shoe. When said parts tightened, the locl'onut upon the forward end of the ri ht and left screw is screwed up against the ridge-piece, locking the screw against turning. The washers. are now forced by'thenuts against the inner edges of the shoe," thereby firmly clampin the heels or quarters of the shoe, and the time is sharp-shod without removal of the shoe. Byproviding the right and left screw to the yoke tor the heel-clips said clips will be evenly drawn together from all sides at the same time, so that thedevice will have an even grip at all the shoe. he nuts and'wa'shers upon the screw-arms will clamp the heels of the shoe, thereby affording additional grip upon the 'shoe and insuring firm attachment of the device upon the hoof and shoe. Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed for the against the edge of the to unscrew are sutliciently points of contact with Patented Feb. 6, 1912..
engage the briogeepiec'e of the toe-clip and mode herein explained. Change may there- .fore be made as regards themechanism thus disclosed, providedZtt-he principles of construction set forth respectively in the following claims are employed. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z- 1. In a calk attachnient for horseshoes, a toe-plate provided with a toe-clip and'a toecalk; a screw rotatably connected to said plate, a yoke having a longitudinal threaded bore for said screw, screw-arms pivoted to said yoke and having heel-clips and heelcalks at their outer ends, and clamping nuts upon said arms.
2. In a calk attachment for horseshoes, a
toe-plate provided witlra toe-clip and a toecalk, a screw rotatably connected to said late, a yoke having a longitudinal threaded ore for said screw, screw-arms pivoted to said yoke and having heel-Clips and heelcalks at their outer ends, washers upon said arms and adapted to bear against the inner ed es of the. shoe, and nuts threaded upon t e screw-arms and bearing against said washers.
