BED-SPRING.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEE JEFFERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bigfork, in the county of Flathead and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bed-Springs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to bed springs, and has for an object to provide means whereby the wires constituting the bottom can be readily adjusted and brought under any desired tension.

Another object of the invention is to provide a structure of the above described character which may be conveniently knocked for shipment or storage and readily set up for use.

In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views:-Figure 1 is a top plan view of the spring. Fig. 2 is a section therethrough on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the corner members.

My improved bed spring comprises corner members 1 each having formed therein

2 and 3 which extend downwardly and inwardly toward one corner of the member, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. Parallel spaced longitudinally disposed shafts 4 have their ends extended through the slots 2, and adjacent to the slots, each shaft has the square wrench receiving portions 5. Bevel gear wheels 6 are secured to the ends of the shafts and are disposed in corner members 1, being in mesh with similar gear wheels 7 on the parallel end or transverse shafts 8. The shafts 8 are extended through the slots 3, as shown.

The fabric wire bottom of the spring embodies the longitudinal wires 9 and the transverse wires 10. The wires 9 have their ends extended over the transverse shafts 8 and secured thereto by the clamp 11, fastening bolts or suitable well known devices being extended through the clamp bars and through the shafts. Similar clamps 12' are employed for holding the ends of the transverse wires 10 to the longitudinal shafts 4t. Brace cross rods 13 connect the corner members with each other, and as illustrated, the

rods each embody sections lt and 15 which are connected together by the turnbuckle 16. The end members are provided with depending pins 17 to which the ends of the brace rods are fitted. Each corner member is provided with a cover 18 on which is formed a locking web 19 which is designed to engage the gear wheel 6 so as to hold the wires 9 and 10 under the required tension.

From the construction described, it will be understood that means are employed herein whereby the end and longitudinal bars can be readily disconnected from each other when it is desired to pack the spring for shipment or storage. The wires 9 and 10 are not interwoven as in many well known forms of springs, but instead, are arranged in superimposed relation. In view thereof, the wires can be wrapped. on their respective shafts so as to reduce the size of the device when folded. When it is desired to obtain tension on the wires 9 and 10, a suitable wrench, (not shown) is engaged with one of the square portions of the shafts and by rotating one of the shafts power will be transmitted to all of the others, thus simultaneously winding the longitudinal and transverse wires. 2 and 3 downwardly and inwardly, as described, the shafts are held against accidentally working upward and becoming displaced from the corner members. Suitable fastening devices 20 are employed for holding the covers 18 in their closed positions.

I claim:

A bed-spring comprising corner members each having a movable closure, tensioning shafts revolubly mounted in the corner members, the said shafts having intermeshing gears thereon disposed in the corner members, means on the covers of the said corner members for engaging the gears to hold the shafts against rotation, the said shafts being arranged in parallel pairs, and a spring bottom including wires having their end portions secured to the said shafts.
