PERFORATED-MUSIC-ROLL SPOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 14, 1911.
Patented Jan. 30, 1912. Serial No. 643,991.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN WIGAN STAnKIE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Elmhurst, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Perforated-Music-Roll Spools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in spools for perforated music rolls and the object of the invention is to attach and secure the inner end of the perforated music roll in such a manner that it is properly centered and not apt to be torn off or mutilated in case the speed of the take-up roll is not checked at the proper time, and furthermore it insures a more regular movement of the perforated sheet in winding and rewinding.
In the accompanyingdrawings in which like letters of reference indicate likeparts in all the figures: Figure 1 is a longitudinal view of the spool, parts being broken away and showing the slots and recesses. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line m-w Fig. 1 showing the manner of fastening the sheet. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the slot showing the music sheet in place.
The spool 1 is of conventional construction preferably made of wood and is provided with the end heads 2 of any suitable construction. A longitudinal slot 3 is cut entirely through the spool on a diametri'cal line and the length of this slot is greater on one side than at the opposite, that is, the ends of the slot are tapered. In the center of this slot and in the walls of the same and at the shorter side of the slot a recess 4 is formed in each side of the slot, which recess extends from the periphery of the roll inward to about one half the diameter of the roll. A perforated music sheet 5 has its end tapered as shown at 9 and this tapered end is doubled over as shown at 6. A tab or washer 7 made of cloth, paste-board, felt or any other suitable material and having a mounted edge is placed between the fold 6 Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
and the main body portion of the tapered end of the music sheet in such manner that the straight edge of the tab rests on the crease, thus formed, at the center of the same. The end edge 10 of the sheet is passed through the slot 3, the end 6 is folded over, the washer 7 is inserted and the folded part 6 is then passed up through the slot 3 in the manner shown in Fig. 2 and drawn up so that the tab or washer 7 passes into the recess 4, the rounded edge of the tab or washer resting against the inner shoulder of the recess. The tab or washer thus serves to hold up the end of the sheet firmly and securely in the spool and to properly center the same, so that in case there is any undue strain along either side edge of the sheet that end of the sheet held in the spool can accommodate itself to such strain without tearing or displacing the sheet.
As the washer 7 is rounded along its upper edge it can tilt or rock within the recess. This washer thus forms a rocking or anchoring piece which serves for holding the sheet in the slot of the spool.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination with a spool having a longitudinal tapered slot and a recess formed in the sides of the slot at the lesser edge of this slot, of a music sheet having its end tapered and this tapered end doubled over, a locking piece placed within the doubled-over end of the sheet, which locking piece has its inner edge rounded to permit the locking piece to rock on this rounded edge within said recess, substantially as set forth.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 7th day of August A. D. 1911.
JOHN WIGAN STARKIE.
