BED-SPRING- FRAME.
I Specification of Letterslatent.
Application filed September 19, 1911.
Patented Jan. 30,1912.
Serial No. 650,186.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS D. HUNCKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ravenna, in the county of Buffalo, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Spring Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bed spring frames.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a frame adapted to carry the springs of the bed and including side and end members, the latter having the terminals of the springs anchored thereto respectively and bein adjustable toward and away from each 0t er whereby the spring members may be tightened and loosened as desired.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a bed spring frame of the character named which includes a novel form of brace between the end and side members for maintaining the frame square, said braces being slidably mounted upon the side members of the frame so as not to interfere with the adjustment of the end members in obtaining the desired tension upon the springs.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in thedetails of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a bed spring frame constructed in accordance with the invention, the spring members being shown in dotted lines attached thereto, Fig. 2, an enlarged plan view of one end of the frame showing the end member thereof in full lines in one position and in dotted lines in an adjusted position. Fig. 3, a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4:, a section on the line 4 4: of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings the frame is shown as rectangular in shape and including cylindrical tubular side members 10 and 11, each of which is provided with threaded terminals 12. The frame further includes end members A and B each of which consists of a bar 13 provided with spaced openings 14 and 15 through which the side members 10 and 11 extend respectively and whereby the end members A and B may be adjusted longitudinally of said side mem bers. Each of the end members A and B carries a clamping plate 16 on its upper edge which is secured in clamping relation to the bar 13 by means of bolts 17 passing through said bar and through the clamping plate. Through the medium of these clamping plates 16 and bolts 17 the terminals of the springs 18 are anchored to the end members A and B respectively as will be apparent.
In order to effect the desired adjustment of the end members A and ,B on the side members 10 and 11 so as to tighten or loosen the springs 18 there is mounted on the threaded end 12 of the side member 10 adjacent the end member A, nuts 19 and 20 disposed on opposite sides of the end memher A. Also mounted on the threaded end 12 of the side member 11 adjacent the end member A are nuts 21 and 22 disposed on opposite sides of said end member. By the manipulation of the nuts 19, 20, 21 and 22 it will be apparent that the end member A can be adjusted longitudinally of the side members 10 and 11. Likewise the threaded end 12 of the side member 10 adjacent the end member B carries nuts 23 and 2 1 disposed on opposite sides of the end member B, while the threaded end 12 of the side member 11 adjacent the end member B carries nuts 25 and 26 disposed respectively on opposite sides of the end member B. By the manipulation of the nuts 23, 2 1, 25 and 26 it will be apparent that the end member B can be adjusted longitudinally of the side members 10 and 11 and by these adjustments of the end members A and B just referred to the springs 18 may be tightened and loosened as desired.
. Disposed at each corner of the frame is a brace C which is designed to maintain the frame square at all times. Each of these braces comprises an arm 27 one terminal of which is provided with an angular extension 28 bearing against the adjacent end member and secured to the latter by means of a bolt 29. The other end of the arm 27 is pivoted between the terminals of a clip 30 by means of a bolt 31. This clip 30 surrounds the adjacent side member of the frame and is rendered slidable on said side member by unscrewing the nut on the bolt 31 so that the clamping action of said clip against the side member is released. lVhen this clamping action is released it is obvious that the end members A and B may be adjusted longitudinally of the side members of the frame without interference from the braces C and when such adjustment is had the nut on the bolt 31 may be operated to again bring the clip 30 into clamping relation with the side member and thus restore the locking relation between the brace and side member.
lVhat is claimed is:
A bed spring frame comprising spaced side members, end members mounted on the side members for longitudinal adjustment of the latter, and braces between the side members and end members, each of said braces comprising a clip slidable on one of the side members, an arm having one end secured between the terminals of said clip by means of a bolt passing through said terminals and said arm and adapted to draw said terminals together to clamp the clip upon the side member and the other end of said arm being disposed against the adjacent side member and secured thereto.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
