IMPROVED SPRING-BED BOTTOM.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom Iit may conpccrn Be it known that I, MATTHEW Faucon, of Bloomington, in the county of McLean, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Bed Bottoms; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the lettel-'s'of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.

v' lhe nature of my invention consists in so constructing and arranging the springs on bed-bottoms that the weight upon the same will be at all times equalized; that is, in such manner if a heavy person is lying ou one side side and alight one or none at all on the other side the springs will nevertheless give equally and keep the bed level; or, in other words, I transfer the excess of weight, on whichever side it may be, to the opposite side.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View, and

Figure 2, a longitudinal vertical section ol" a hedstead with my improved bed-bottoni therein.

A represents the'bedstead, made in any desired size and shape, within which tits the bed-bottom frame B.

In `the bed-bottom frame B are three cross-bars, one at the head and one at the foot, both marked C in the drawing, and another, I), in or rather under the center of the frame. v

The bed-slats E E, which run lengthwise in the frame B, are connected at their center on the under side by-a cross-Slat, G, and a suitable distance from their ends by leather straps H H. i

Each slatlE is at each end connected with the crossbar G in the following manner:

Upon the bar C is secured a wire spring, I, formed of one piece of wire, bent in the center so as to form a projecting tongue or loop, a, fastened by means of a staple, t'. The wire is then bent so as to form two coils e e, and the ends extend inward and form hooks, which are fastened in a leather piece, J, secured tothe -under side oi' the seat E.

Upon the cross-bar D are placed and rm'ly secured the large ends of a series of spiral springs, K K, the smaller ends of which are secured to and support the cross-Slat (i.

Under the center ot" the bar D is pivoted a lever, L, which, by rods M M, is connected with the outside slatsE. l

The center springs K K prevent the bed-slats E from sinking down in the middle ofthe bed and resting on the cross-bar.

The rods M M with pivoted the lever L equalize the weight of a heavy person with a light one in the same bed. y

The weight of the heavy person will push down the rod under him and draw down the other side; by the pushing on one end of the lever back, brings the other end forward, thus causing a child to lie level with a .heavy person, and the springs under the light person will move with as much ease'fas those under the heavy person.

The attachments and springs at the ends of the bed-slats E are without any pole through the springs, for the purpose of making bet-ter springs, which' will spring without binding ou such pole as in others, and consequently make no place for bedbugs. Also, the leather attachment will bear down at bot-h sides of each slat and hold them level, and, besides, will not make a joint'at the ends of the slats, as with all others.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure hy Letters Patent, is

The combination of the bed-slats E E, leather' pieces J J, springs I I and K K, connecting-rods M M, and lever L, all constructed and'arranged as described to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
