Description

NPETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER WASHINQTON D C @initrd 5mm 13 aient otitis.
Letters Patent No. 101,598, :Ia-ted April 5, 1870.
-.www
IMPROVEMENT IN TICKET-PUNCH.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and'making part of the same.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT ENGELS, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an improved Iicket-Punch, and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the same.A4
My invention consists of a ticket-punch, in which the spring for operating the jaws is arrangedbetween the operating portions of the said jaws, instead of he- ,tween the handles, asusual. And my invention also consistsin acase or box attached to one of the jaws, in placeof the usual stripper-plate, and adapted for the reception ofthe said spring, and of a portion ofthe other jaw, all of which will he iidlydescribed hereafter.
In` order to enable others to make and apply my inventioirl will now proceed to describe the Inode of constructing and usingthe same, reference-being had to the `accompanying drawing which forms apart of thisspecilication, and in which- Fi'gu-res 1 and 2, are views of the two main portions of myv improved ticket-punch, detached from each other- Jfig. 3, a sectional view of the complete punch.
Fig. 4, a transverse section on the line 1, 2, tig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow, and
Fig;'5, a view of a. modification.
Similar letters refer to similar' parts throughout the several views.
.The jaws A and A of the punch are. crossed 'and connected together by a pin a, and have the usual4 handles b b which can be plain, as shown in the first three -igures of the drawing, or one of them can he formed into a loop, as seen in fig. 5, 'for convenience of attachment to a cord or light chain.
A thin metal box or case, B, is secured to the jaw A by screws, c c c, in such a position that space D shall intervene between it and the end, f, of the said jaw, and'within this case is contained the end, j', of the jaw A' to vwhich the punching tooth, h, is secured,
, the latter being arranged to pass through a hole, i, of
the case, and into the opening h of the jaw A, when the handles; b b, are pushed toward each other, but
remaining entirely within the. case, as shown in fig. 2, when the-pressure is removed, owing to the Haction of a spring, fm.
The latter is a simple strip ofbent steel contained withimthe case l'i, and arranged to bear against the end ofthe jaw A', it heilig held within a notch, p, of the jaw A', and thus maintained in afproper position.
'Ihe spring4 is designed to take the place of the usual inconvenient back-spring,'which is placed hetween the handles ofthe punchin the mannerimlicated by dotted lines in tig. 3, this back-spring interfering with the proper manipulation of the handles and hecomingfrequently broken, owing toits exposed position.
The spring an, moreover, is fully protected by the case I, and is placed in a more advantageous position, acts more directly, is less expensive, and more readily replaced when broken, than the back-spring.7
lhc case B besides serving as a guard for the spring, takes the. place of the usual stripper-plate, gives the instrument a neat appearance, and covers all angular or projecting portions of theinstrument, which would be likely to catch in or tear the pocket.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by letters patent 1. The spring m, attached to the jaw A of a ticket-puuch, contained within a case B ofthe same, and arranged to bear against the jaw A' ofthe said punch, substantially, in the manner described.
2. The ease B secured to the jaw A so as to be readily detached therefrom, and in such a position that it shall serve as a stripper-plate for the punch, substantially as specified.
3. Tile case B adapted for application toa punch,
lsubstantially as herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. y
ROBERT ENG, E LS.
