PRINTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH S. DUNCAN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Chi- Cook and' State of new and usecago, in the county of Illinois, have invented certain which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates in general to that class of printing devices in which the printing characters are stamped in relief ony one side ofthe metal plate,'the other side of the plate showing the printing, characters in Vint-aglio.
IOne of the objects of this invention is the provision of a printing device of this char: acter which is adapted to be arranged in accordance with a card-index system with the intaglio side at structed to hold a. reference card which I'nay be read fromtheintaglio side of the plate and which may be slipped into positionfrom the relief side of the plate.
,Another object is the provision of a plate having a printing panel depressed below' the the surrounding p rtions of the plate,
. surrounding portions'at two sides of the lief, this being the late being of lesslheight than the remaining portions .and "the outer faces fof' the higher portions being inclined tofperrnit the plate to be pressed against thecard or envelop to be printed without'breaking or inj uring the surface of the card o-r envelop.
The invention will` be best 'understmid layn reference to the fo'lowing description when taken inconnection4 with the accompanying drawings illustrating one preferred'embodiment thereof.
Referring to my invention and showing on which thetype characters appear in refront-,or printing siiieof the device. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the opposite side of the device on which the type characters appear lin intaglio and, ordinarily considered the bachv of the device. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. l is a transverse sectional view takenI on the line Ll-#4 of Fig. 1:lv and Figs. 5 and 6 are fragmentary i tabs of various kinds and I have shown it 'longit ldinal sectional views on the lines 5-5 and (il-6 of Fig.4 1.
The device is preferably stamped from a single sheet of met-al'and comprises a centrally disposed panel 10 which may be of the front and is conf plat-e velop thef drawings-Figure 1 is a plan view of a printing device embodying that side thereof Patentedgan 23,1912. j limitation inea July 17,1911. serial No. 638,800.
any desired dimensions, but is preferably made large enough toaccommodate'anaddress' of several lines.
The device is originally com osed of a sheet-metal blank 'or plate andt e panelis formedby depressing vthe 'same so that itsl original front yface of the platerand the rear face of the panel is projectedrelatively to the original rearfaCe-of the plate. `r,The
` ,printing face is depressed relativelyto the type characters are stamped 'inthe panel so that they appear in vrelief on the depressed face. The portions'of the yplate 'surrounding the panel are elevated relatively to the printing". face thereof', the 'top andl bottoni portions 11 and'f12," respectively, being ele' vated above the printingj'face of the panel a greater distance'tlian'vthe end portions -13 and 14:. :It will be manifest that when the plates are stacked or nested, some protection must be afforded to the printing characters whichT are formed in relief on'the l'printing panel andthe topj and bottom portionsll and 12 areaccordingly projected above the faceof'the panel a' suficientdisprinting the printing characters; It hasbe'en found,
'liowever,'.that it' is 'unnecessary-that the end portions ofthe 'plate' adjacent the panel yprojectjas` far as the ttop'- and bottom' portions and, en the contrary,
not desirableffo' I.the reason 'thatwhen the is forced or pressed against' an -enorcard to 4be printed', the card, par?. ticularly if it isf'of relatively 'thick material, is-apt to of the e'nd and llon'git-udinal,elevated por-` tions 'of the plate." portions are made lower than the: top and4 bottom portions to' permit the card .to be Curved or depressed longitudinally .between the top and bottom portions and against-fthe Jrint-in@r characters without'beinf. )ernia- `nently bent or broken. To furtherffacilitate the temporary `vcurving. :ofthe card,.th'e prof jecting surfacesof the top and botton'i'portions 11 and 12'arepreferably inclined inf `wardly toward they printing face of the panel. i
The device maybe provided with index constructed'to receive thev tabs 15 and 1G -of which the former may be' used for alphabeticalclassication and the latter forgeographical classification, if` dcsiredgj 'These i1() 'such a 'constructionis be bent or Vbroken at the junction For this reason the end tabs are each Yprov-idedwith stems 17 j and 18 l which are adapted? to engage openings 19 and 2O at the top and bottom of the elevated portion 11.. I prefer to remove the netal entirely, forming the openings19, but in `forming the openings 20 the metal is arranged to form lips 21011 the back of the device for the purpose hereinafter described. The openings 19 and 2O are arranged' in pairs, one above the other, and as many pairs l may be `provided extending lengthwise of ribsor beads 22 which serve the dual pur-Y pose ofstrengthening t-he device transversely and of assistingin spacing the devices apart when they are nested. r.The projecting portion 11 is closed at one end and open at the other, as indicatedfat 23 to permit of the .insertion of a card 24 beneaththe -r flange 25 and the lips 21. The cardgmay bear thename appearing on the address and theldate of expiration ofthe partys subscription or any other desired informationor data and, while inserted from the print ing side of the device, is adapted to be read' from the opposite side thereof, as will be evident from Fig. 2. The outer edge of the projection 12 is turned back upon itself as indicatedat 26 (Fig- 4), forming a flange spaced from the inclined bottom ,portion of the projection.
It will be evident from the foregoing that the printing panel itself, is depressed rela-A tively to the surrounding portions of the plate and that the printing face thereof is depressed below the endA portions of the plates 13. and l14, while the front faces of said portions are, in turn, depressed relativelyto'rthe projecting portions 11 and 12.
This construction enables a stiff card, such the `printing characters carried upon :the`A as a postal card, to beiffi'rmly pressed against printing panel', 'the lower ends .13y andwlll permitting the card; to v'eiirve or bend -l'ongi tud inally v between'y the higher'v proj eotingA por tionsVM 11' and. 12 without lliability or '1 danger of permanentlyV distortingonfbieakingthe cards f ilhe dat-afbeairings. mayI be `readil1y= replacedratflcomparatiafelry'i small rexpense "when .thesubscriptionfisnenewedand this the expense ofiren'ewing 'the enf; tire devricelavhiichwould bez necessary if the.- date of.
