To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, HENRY C. PREs'roN and OTHNIEL PRESTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Hornell, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Beaters, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to improvements in carpet heaters, and consists in certain details of construction, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more particularly described in the specification, illustrated in the brations incident to its use.

Its objects are to provide a whip or beater for carpets or other fabrics, in which the whip portion is so combined with the handle that it will not become loosened by the vi- And the inconstruction of device of this character in which the handle will be strengthened and reinforced and liability to split avoided, without the necessity of employing a ferrule.

With these objects in view, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a front elevation showing our completed device. Fig. 2, is a similar view, with the handle partly in section, or broken away, to show the method of securing the ends of the whip within the handle. Fig. 3, is a transverse section at right angles to that of Fig. 2.

In the construction of our beater, we employ a wire loop, which, in the present instance, is composed of strands twisted or braided together and having its ends overlying each other at the point where they connect with the handle, said handle being 4 provided with a longitudinal socket extending inwardly to receive them, and wherein they are held in place by a filling of fusible metal introduced in the socket in its liquid or molten state.

The handle of the device may be composed of either wood or metal, but is preferably formed of wood, and to obviate its tendency to split, we provide the handle with a transverse aperture extending therethrcugh and communicating with the socket of the handle intermediate of the ends of the latter, said aperture having enlarged or flaring ends designed to form heads for an integral bolt or rivet composed of the fusible metal which forms the filling.

Referring more particularly to the drawing by letter, A designates an implement which is, in the present instance, composed of wire strands braided together and formed into a loop to constitute the whip portion of the beater.

B designates the handle.

The letters a, a represent the extreme ends of the whip in their mounted relative positions within the handle.

The handle B is formed with a longitudinally extending socket E to receive the ends of the wire loop, said socket being preferably formed with a slightly flaring mouth 6 to facilitate the introduction of the fusible metal, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

C designates the filling in place surrounding the ends of the loop within the handle and also serving to form the rivet G and its heads f, Figs. 2 and 3. The handle is also formed with a transverse aperture extending therethrough and communicating with the socket intermediate of the ends of the latter, said aperture being designed to be cccupied by the rivet. The ends of the whip portion of the beater constitute the shank and are allowed to extend in their overlying condition for a slight distance after they merge from the handle B, whereby they are caused to support each other and relieve the strain at the point where the tendency to break is strongest.
