CLIPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 23,191.2.
Applicationled March 17, 1909. SerialvNo. 484,041.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. REDMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex Vand Sta-te of New Jersey, have invented certain new` and useful Improvements in Clippers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same, reference being yhad to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a clipper, andis designed to provide a device of this kind that has a pair of levers with handles attached thereto, these levers being permanently attached together, and two blades, one stationary, and one sliding on the stationary blade, are mounted on the handles, these blades being slid on each other when the handles are worked, and a back plate is provided to cover the pivot of the levers and to be attached to one of them, and having adjustable means thereon passing through the blades and through itself so that the pressure of the blades, one on the other,-can
be adjusted and at the same time the whole device held together. The advantage of this construction is `that when the clipper is taken apart, the two blades can lbe removed, and the levers and the handles are held together, and in this way the assembling and taking apart of the members is an,
easy operation. v
The invention is further designed to provide a joint for the levers which is easy in its operation, due to ball-bearings supplied thereto, and the front plate is also provided, in one of the constructions, withv a ballretainer that bears on the sliding blade and thus causes an easy operation.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of an improved clipper, and Fig. 2 is a section through the` `.50.portions of the clipper separated slightly to j show that construction to better advantage. Fig. 4 is a face view of a clipper of a modified form of construction. Fig. 5 is a side view of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a sectionq through the pivot of the levers in the back plate.
TheA devicefconsists of a pair of levers 10 and 11, each of which is provided with a handle' portion 12, and these levers 10 and 11 are 1n pivotal relation, this pivotal joint lbeing described hereinafter. One of the levers,
as 10, has ears 13 projecting on opposite sides and forming bearings'against which ya 4blade 14 rests, the blade 14 having perforations 15'one being arranged near each `end thereof, these perforations fitting the pins 1G on the back ofthe ears 13. `rI`he blade 14 is provided with teeth 17 against which slide the teeth/18 of a blade 19, which bladeV is adapted to slide on the blade 14, which is the ordinary action of clippers of has atop portion 27'whose edge is adapted to ylit against the blade 19 as shown in Fig. 2.
The iitbetween the fingers 24 and the slots 25 is tight enough to normally hold the back" plate in position on the ears.
AAbolt 28 has a square head 29, which head is preferably countersunk and rests in the plate 14, the bolt having a screw-threaded portion passing through a slot- 30 `in the blade 14 and passing through a perforation in the back plate. A nut 31 is screwed "this kind, and thus have a shearing action 26 ofthe back plate 23, and this back plate down on the bolt 28 so as to pull the back plate and the two blades together, and thus vary the tension or pressure on thexblades to suit the operator. Aspring washer 32 is preferably placed between the nut and the back plate. The back plate is kprovided with the wings 33 extending on each side thereof, thereby giving the edge 27 a longer bearing on the blade 14, and I can, if desired, place a retainer 34 under the wings 33y to retain the balls 35, which balls are adapt-1 ed to lessen the friction between the back plate and the sliding blade as shown in Figs.
' which are seated the balls 39. The opposed face of the lever l0 is provided similarly with ball-retaining grooves 40, and the head 41 is provided with retaining grooves 42 and has a screw-threaded stem 43 which fits into the screw-threaded perforation 44 of the lever 10, and thus a bearing is supplied that is easy Working. Another advantage of this bearing is that it is Wide, in other Words, an operator using a pair of clippers and Working the handles is apt to give them a.
twisting motion, and the bearing of these balls, at a distance from the pivot, gives a bearing at a number of points outside the pivot that prevents any locking of the levers, one on the other, and holds them in line when being Worked, as hereinbefore pointed out. One of the advantages of this device is that When the blades are to be taken off, the nut 31 is loosened and the bolt 28 and the blades 14 and 19 can be moved together, and the back plate and the levers rein-aiu in their assembled position, and it is not necessary to separate them unless desired, and
Having thus described my invention, what A I claim is A clipper comprising a pair of levers having handles thereon, ears on the first lever extending from side to side, a blade fixed to the first lever beneath the ears, a sliding blade having its back edge resting on the ears of the iirst lever and lying adjacent to the fixed blade and sliding thereon, the back edge otthe sliding blade adjacent to the ears having a slot therein which co-acts with the ears to limit the sliding movement of the sliding blade, a pin on the second lever arranged to enter the central portion of the slot in the sliding blade to slide the blade when the levers are operated, a back plate bearing on the sliding blade, a bolt secured in the iixed blade, the sliding blade being slotted to receive the bolt, the bolt also passing through the back plate, a nut on the bolt for regulating the pressure against the back plate, the back plate having sides bearing on the ears, and ears on the back plate, the ears on t-he first lever being slotted to receive the ears of the back plate.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 2nd day of March, 1909.
