Description

HENRY sTEPHnNsON, WILLIAM THOMPSON, AN
SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND,
BYRNE, OF NEW YORK CITY.
Letters Patent No. 101,535, dated April 5, 1870; mitedatefl JiIrLrglLl@,vll'Q.`
IMPROVEMENT IN ORNAMIENTAIPS(TROLL TYPE.-
m The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY STEPHENSON, WIL- LIAM THOMPSON, and WILLIAM GREAvEs BLAKE,'of Sheield, in England, have invented a new and improved Type for Printing Type-Ribbon and we do hereby declare that the followingl is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same,'reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved ar-lv rangement of type, whereby type-ribbon, so called, may be printed in various forms by type set up in forms the same as printing-type.
The invention consists in a set of type of peculiar construction, which, when arranged form, and with thick and thin brass or other metal rules, will represent the reverse of a design of type- Iibbon, that is, a ribbon arranged in space and folded back and forth, so as to present two or more rows of y plane surfaces, with intervals between, one above another, with diagonal parts between the rows, and terminating with waving ends, on which plane surfaces advertisements may be printed by ordinary printingtype set up in the forms with these improved type, alll as hereinafter more fully specified.
Figure 1 is a view of a complete type-ribbon, printedon a card, and with an advertisement printed thereon;
Figure 2 is a face view of the type for print-ing the shading at tbeends of the planesurfaces Figure 3 is a face view of the type for the ends of the ribbon;
Figure 4 is a face view of the type' for long diagonale between the plane parts;
Figure 5 is a face view of type for short diagonals;
Figure 6 isa face view of type for intermediate diagonals; and
Figure 7 is an edge view of the rules for making the lines between the shading formed by the type, fig. 2, to indicate the plane surfaces.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The face views of these type, as here represented, show the different forms required for producing, when together in a set up with lettered type, the print represented inv at all the other turns b.
5 5 represent the type for the long diagonals l bctween the lower and next row of plane surfaces.
, 3 3 are the type for the short diagonale e between the middle and upper rows of plane surfaces; and
4 4 represent medium diagonal type j, which may be lsubstituted/for either the long or short ones, or other intermediates, or longer or shorter diagonals may be used, as desired.
The Astraight lines g, iig. 7, represent the edges of the rules to be placed in the form to make the light line above and the heavy one below for the planes between the bends b.
As many duplicates of these'type as may be re-l quired for the number of planes, folds, diagonals, and terminations, made in one print, may be used in one form.
Having thus described our invention,
e claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement of the type l 1 to form the terminal a, 2 `2 to form the shadings b, 5 5 to form long diagonalsll, 3 3l to form short diagonals e, and 4 4 to form intermediate diagonals f, all located in a form, and combined with thick and thin metal rules g g, as and for the purpose specified.
The above specification of our invention signed by us this 22d day of December, 1869.
HENRY STEPHENSON. WM. THOMPSON. WILLIAM GREAVES BLAKE.
