MEDIGIATING-DIULATGR.

Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 13.11 16,1912. i Application filed June 10, 1911. ser al m esa ive. i l

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, THEODORE WEAVER and DELLA M. ENNIS, citizens of the United in Medicating-Dilators, of which the fol-' lowing is a specification. p

This invent-ion relates to instruments. for

the treatment of rectal diseases such as piles and constipation, and especially to a. di-

lating and medicating instrument adapted to be worn by the person afflicted with such disorder, and so constructed as to discharge or inject a salve or the like at the seat of the disorder.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in 'which- 1 Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plunger forming part ofthe instrument. Fig.2 is

a longitudinal section thereof: Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the base of the instrument,.. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the complete instrument. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the instrument, with the plunger retracted. Fig. 6 is a detail in sect-ion of the plunger. Y

The instrument comprises a hollow hard This is substantially uniform from its upper or outer end to apoint about the middle thereof, and froln such point the tube increases in diameter as indicated at 7, to a point a short distance from the base, at whichit abruptly diminishes to a smaller diameter as indicated at. 8. This tube screws at its lower end on a conical l base 9, as indicated at 10, said base being elongated in one direction as shown in Fig. 3, and having a circular raised rim or part 11, as compared to the surrounding surface,

extending around the nipple or threaded plug to which thetube 6 is screwed. The part 8 of smaller diameter forms a groove designed for the voluntary sphincter. muscle to clutch and retain the instrument. The base piece is particularly shaped to form a detachable base for tubes of various sizes, to be screwed thereon, so that the size of the dilator may be varied accordingto local con ditions. At its front end the tube is provided with a'series of holes 12, and with a tapered end piece 13, screwed on the end of the tube, said end piece having a hole 14. This tip may be unscrewed and re-;

moved, in order to clean the instrument.

Within the tube is a plunger comprising venting-leak about the piston.

spr1ng.21 1s attached to the'plunger and acts 2. An instrument of I comprising a tube with openings at the front carried: at the end of a threaded rod '20 on,

whichthe nuts are, screwed to. clamp the other parts of the plunger together. The leather packing is for the purpose of pre to advance the same to force a salve or the llke out through the holes 12 and 14:. The

end of the rod opposite to the plunger is A- spiral i provided with a head '22, and said rod may be'inserted through a hole in the base 9, and a sliding catchf23, located in areces's in the base, is adapted to engage the head of the rod, when the spring 21 iscornpressed, and when the catch is engaged it will prevent movement of the plunger, until such In the use of the device the-medicated so a o material is placed in the tube andthe instrument 7 is inserted,- the: spring being compressed and the rod being caught byg the catch. When it is desired to apply the material the catch is released as above stated.

The groove for the voluntary sphincter is I of especial importance, as it permits the in strument to be retained at will, as other contrivances could not be, sincethe externalsphincter is the only voluntary rectal vmuscle, and the use of .the'instrument willinduce effective control of that muscle; The

v construction of the plunger also permits new packing to be applied whenever necessary;

Having thus descrlbed". our lnve'ntion, what we claim as new; and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A n instrument of the kind'des cribed, comprising a recessed base, a tube attached thereto, a spring actuated plunger in the tube,'t ending to advance toward the frontend of the tube, arod connected to the plunger and movable through a hole in the base, said rod having a head at its outer end,

and a catch slidable laterally in the recess in the baseandengageable with the head of the rod to hold the plunger in retracted position. g v the kind described,
