FLEXIBLE FIRE-R-ESISTING SHUTTER.
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. MCLoUn,
.a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklinv and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement' in {Flexible-Fire- Resisting Shutters, of which the following is a specification. 4
The object of this invention is to provide an improved construction of slat for the manufacture of fiexible shutters or curtains and a shutter or curtain that shall be strongl and ,durable and shall resist fire and shed The invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawinge-Figure,` l is a vertical transverse section of a slat ac'- cording to the invention. Fig. 2 is a side View of the endy of several such slats showi'ng end locks. l
The slat is indicated as formed out of strips of sheet metal. The outer face of the body 5 of theslat is inclined to the ver tica'l and the vupper edge is bent in a horizontal direction as se'en at 5a and formed with a substantially cylindrical roll 5". The
lower edge of the outer portion of the bodyv of the slat is first bent to form an overhanging lip 5c and to stand horizontally as seen at 5r1 and with a roll 5f of cylindrical ,contour but open at its inner side for less4 than half the circumference or substantially as shown. To complete the tubular body of the slat I secure between the horizontally extending edges of the forward portion of theslat-a second strip of sheet metal 8 bent at its-upper edge and provided with a roll 8a `fitting' within the roll 5b,and bent at its` lower end to extend into and be locked with the metal of 'the overhanging lip 56. Inv
the tubular slat thus formed there can be inserted a strip or core of wood 9 or other materialpreferably of light weight adapted to retard radiation and conduction of heat.
The body portions referred to are shown to be parallel but the construction in this particular can be modified as can other features Within .the scope of the invention. Both the horizontal jointi-ng portions projectfrom the same side of the slat and the Specification of Letters Patenti Application filed January 2?', 1908.
Patented aan. 9,1912. serial No.' 412,775.
slats vare joined together by sliding the roll of one lengthwise into that of another, the roll for example 5b fitting within the roll 5f. When the slats are thus joined they can freely rock with reference to each other .to the extent permitted by the contact of the horizontal portions with the edges of the rolls 5f. The horizontal portions constitute shoulders taking vertical thrust and because of the considerable extent ofvthei'r projections they give lateral strength and prevent the ready bucklingof the sl-at and curtain. The end lock (shown more particularly in Fig. 2) is of .well known form and comprises a head 6 having an outline that projoints of the two connected slats so as to form a bearing to prevent wear of the slats by their travel in the channels usually pro- -vided for flexible curtains. The end lock also includes a shank 6a for securing it to the body of the slat, rivets 7 being employed for that prrpose. The end locks can be applied to the opposite ends of alternate slats when in the shutter orcurtain and they will prevent undue longitudinal movement of the slats on each other.
