To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN WEIR, of 84 Norse road, Scotstown, Renfrewshire, Scotland, ship surveyor, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Connected with Hatchway-Govers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in flexible hatchway covers composed of thin connected metal plates and adapted to be coiled upon drums, and consists in the particular form of the component plates and has for its object to expedite the putting on and removal of same, and making the hatchways rain tight.

In carrying out my invention, I construct the covers of laths or strips of metal held together bythe abutting edges locking one with the other, and which run in suitable grooves in the sides of the hatch-way. Movable supports or stays for the cover are provided immediately underneath the same. The cover is operated by any suitable gearmg.

In order that my invention may be properly understood and readily carried into effect, I have hereunto appended one sheet of drawings of which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section showing the hatchway cover embodying my invention entirely drawn over the hatchway. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same showing the hatchway cover almost entirely drawn over the hatches. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section of the cover. Fig. 4 is a similar view illustrating a modification of the same all hereafter more fully referred to and described.

With reference to the drawings, the hatchway cover indicated by A is composed, in one of its simplest forms, of thin metal plates or strips held together by bending up the abutting edges into the formation of hooks as seen in cross section, one plate or strip A interlocking with its adjacent plate or strip A as seen more particularly in Fig. 3. This characteristic in construction permits of the cover A being coiled upon the drum or barrel B mounted as shown in the left hand side of the hatchway C, When it is desired to give access to the hatch; the cover is unwound and drawn by the ring D over the hatch-way in order to constitute a cover, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. Guides E, F, are connected at both sides of the cover, and these embrace the bead or guides 0 of the hatchway G. The cover is also supported on a longitudinal guide or bar Gr. The drum or barrel may be rotated by a crank handle fitted upon the square H and II of the spindle or by any other means. It will be seen that the inclosing wall C of the hatchway C, is divided by a partition C so as to form a compartment for the roller. The partition C extends toward but not to the top of the inclosing wall and the guide C is mounted on the partition wall C to properly guide the cover.

With reference to Fig. 4:, the cover A is composed of duplex plates A and A one above and the other below and interlocking together as shown.

Claim.

In combination with a vertical hatchway inclosing wall opening upwardly and having a substantially horizontal upper margin provided with bead-like guides extending therefrom, a partition wall dividing said inclosing wall into a roller compartment and hatchway proper and extending toward but not to the top of said inclosing wall, a roller in said compartment disposed below the upper edge of said partition wall, a cover guide on said partition, a horizontal cover guide bar extending across the hatchway proper and attached to said partition and said inclosing wall, a jointed cover adapted to be wound off from said roller over said guide bar and fitting inside of the inclosing wall to close the hatchway, and guides on the end of said cover embracing the feetlike extensions on the exterior of said inclosing wall.
