MARTIN W. LONGFELLOW, 0F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE BALTIMORE GAS APPLIANCE AND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
GAS-RANGE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN W. LONGFEL- Low, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas-Ranges, specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in gas ranges, and has reference more particularly to the hinge box and cap employed to receive and cover the spring usually employed to place a tension upon the oven doors, and other similar moving parts.
Heretofore it has been the practice to bolt the top or cap of a hinge box of the nature above referred to, directly to the wall of the stove, and in order to remove the spring for repairs, or other purposes it is usually necessary to first remove the lining and then cut off the bolts before the cap can be removed.
One of the objects of the present invention is to overcome this diiiiculty by providing an improved hinge box and cap so constructed that the cap may be securely held in position to cover the spring, and yet may be readily released and removed for inspection or repair of the spring.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a front view of a portion of a gas range with my improved hinge box and cap applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail view illustrating the hinge box and cap in side elevation with the cap closed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view with the hinge box open and the cap about to be removed.
Referring to the drawing, 10 designates a gas range of any suitable or preferred construction, the form shown being provided with a front frame and a burner top 12, said front frame being provided with a transverse bar 13 at the division point between the oven 14-, and broiling compartment 15. The oven and the broiling compartment are each closed by a door 16. Each door is provided with hinge lugs 17,18, the lug 17 engaging suitable lugs 19 carried by one end wall 11; the lug 18 being squared as indicated at 18 to engage one end of a volute spring 20, said spring being coiled around said lug and having its other end of which the following is a.
Specification of Letters Patent.

provided with an angular extension 22 projected through an opening 23 formed in one of the end bars of frame 11 and below a box 24 formed in said bar for the reception of said spring 20.
The box 2 1 is closed by a cap 25 provided with a lug 26 engaging the lower wall of opening 23 below the angular extension 22 of spring 20. Said cap is provided with a lip or flange 27- adapted to be engaged by a thumb latch 28 pivotally secured to the end bar of the frame 11 above box 24. In practice the box is closed by the cap 25, which is moved upwardly upon its pivotal connection at 26, the latch 28 engaging the flange 27. When it is desired to examine or repair the spring 20 it is only necessary to move aside the latch 28, whereupon the cap 25 may be removed by withdrawing lug 26 from opening 23, exposing the spring to view, and rendering the same readily accessible. It will thus be seen that repairs may be easily and quickly made without in any manner injuring the walls of the range or the lining thereof. The cap 25 is provided with an opening 29 in which is secured asbestos or othersuitable wicking 30 contacting with said spring 20, whereby oil or other lubricant may be fed to the spring to prevent corrosion and lengthen the life thereof.
Having thus explained the nature of my invention, and described an operative manner of constructing and using the same, although without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made, or all of the forms of its use, what I claim is 1. An improvement in gas ranges comprising a range front provided with a hinge box, a door provided with a pivot lug, a spring located in said box and engaging said lug, a cover for said box provided at one end with an ear detaohably engaging said front and at its top with an opening for the passage of lubricant, and a pivoted latch engaging the other end of said cover to hold the same in position over said hinge box.
2. An improvement in gas ranges comprising a range front provided with a hinge box and an opening below said box, a door provided with a pivot lug, a spring located in said box and engaging said lug, a cover provided at one end with an ear engaging said opening and an opening in the top thereof, wicking secured in the top 'of said cover to receive lubricant through the opening in said cover, and a pivoted latch arranged to engage the other end of said cover.
3. An improvement in gas ranges com prising a range front provided with a hinge boX and an opening below said box, a door provided with a pivot lug, a spring located in said box and having one end engaging said lug, the other end of said spring being provided with an angular portion engaging said opening, a cover provided at one end with an ear engaging said opening and an opening for the passage of lubricant in the 15 top thereof, and a pivoted latch arranged to engage the other end of said cover.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
