BAGKBOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2;, 1912.
Application filed October 8, 1910. Serial No. 586,114.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, JONATHAN B. Hon- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkin, in the county of Surry and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Backboard, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of the present invention to improve generally the construction of back boards for telephones shown in my prior application filed April 16, 1910, Serial No. 555,7 95, allowed May 21, 1910.
One of the primary aims of the present invention is to simplify and lessen the cost of manufacture of the device and render its embodiment in a telephone back board more ready of accomplishment than in the form of the invention shown in my aforesaid prior application.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of that portion of the device which is applied to the wall or other support upon which the telephone is to be mounted. Fig. 2 is a similar view looking at the rear face of a telephone back board and illustrating the embodiment of the in vention therein. Fig. 3 is a vertical sec-- tional view through a portion of the wall or other support and the said telephone backboard.
In the drawings, the wall or other support is indicated by the reference character W and the telephone back-board by the reference character B. In mounting the back board of the telephone'upon the wall, particularly where the wall is of plaster and the only support which is afforded the telephone is in the nature of an ordinary mold ing strip, indicated by the numeral 5, the second strip indicated by the numeral 6 is secured to the wall transversely of the strip 5. For a purpose to be presently explained, a number of supporting hooks are arranged upon the transverse cleat 6 in spaced relation and in horizontal alinement, and each of these hook members includes a shank which is threaded and is indicated by the numeral 7, and a head which is indicated by the numeral 8 and consists of two oppositely vertically projecting arms.
The back board B of the telephone has its rear face recessed as at 9 and secured upon the said face of the board over the recess is a plate 10. This plate 10 is formed with slots which are equal in number to and are designed to receive the hooks 8. Each of these slots includes a vertically extending portion 11 having a lateral portion 12 extending from its upper end and terminating in a notch 13. In forming the slot, the plate is properly slit and that portion of the plate formerly filling the space of the vertical portion 11 of each slot is struck in at right angles as at 14, these portions 14 projecting into the recess 9 in the rear face of the back-board B.
I11 arranging the telephone upon the wall, it is first disposed with its hooks 8 projecting into the vertical portions 11 of the respective slots in the plate 10, and the telephone is then lowered until the shanks of the hooks engage with the upper edges of the laterally extending portions of the slots, after which the telephone is moved laterally to bring the notches 13 directly above the respective hook shanks and the telephone is then slightly lowered so as to engage the hook shanks in the said notches. The engagement of the shanks in the notches serve effectually to prevent lateral movement of the telephone, which movement must be had before the telephone can be dismounted from the wall, it being furthermore necessary to lift the telephone in dismounting it, until the hook shanks are out of engagement in the said notches.
From the foregoing it will be readily understood that while the telephone may be readily mounted upon and dismounted from a wall carrying the hook members 8, it will be firmly held and supported in place.
WVhat is claimed is v In a telephone support, the combination with a telephone back board, of a plate secured over arecess in the board and formed with a number of slots each including a vertically extending portion and a laterally extending portion, and a plurality of hooks adapted for attachment to a support and to enter the first mentioned portions of the slots and engage at their shanks in the latmy own, I have hereto affixed my signature eral portions of the slots, the material of in the presence of two Witnesses.
the plate bein struck up to form the Vertically extendi ng portions of the slots, the JONATHAN BLAIR HORTON 5 struck up portions projecting rearwardly Witnesses:
and into the recess. J. I. MYERs,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as WV. E. OALVARD.
