To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAooB A. MARKS, a citizen of the United States, residing v at Nevada, in the county of Vernon and State of'Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattress-Racks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to mattress racks and more especially to racks for use in the storing and displaying of mattresses, and my object is to produce a device of this character of simple, strong, durable and inexpensive construction by which any desired number of mattresses may be compactly arranged in superposed relation or all or any number of them disposed in angular relation to expose their entire upper or lower sides to view or to enable the salesman to readily remove or replace a mattress in position with ease and despatch.

With this general object in view and others as hereinafter appear, the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and organization as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood refer-.

ence is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1, is a plan View of a mattress rack embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is a side view of the same.

In the said drawing, 1 indicates a rectangular base frame of size to easily receive a mattress of standard dimensions and secured to and projecting upward from the opposite sides of said base frame are front and rear standards 2 and 3 respectively, said standards inclining rearwardly and upwardly for a purpose which hereinafter appears. The front standards project to a higher plane than the rear ones'and connecting the upper ends of the standards 2 and 3 at corresponding sides of the frame are bars 4, the standards and said bars constituting upwardly projecting sides for the base frame. The upwardly projecting sides are secured in fixed relation by a cross bar 5 bridging the space between and secured at its opposite ends to the front standards 2, near the upper ends of the same. To impart rigidity to the upwardly projecting sides of the base frame inclined brace bars 6 are secured at their upper rear ends to the upwardly projecting sides at their rear upper corners and at their front ends are secured to the lower front corners of the base Specification of Letters Patent.

frame, filling or spacing blocks 7 being used if desired between the lower ends of the inclined brace bars 6 and the said base frame.

For convenience in moving the rack about it is mounted upon casters 8, secured in blocks 9 arranged at the corners of the base frame.

10 indicates a plurality of rectangular tills arranged one above another and above the base frame and corresponding structurally in all respects to the latter if desired. The tills and the base frame also are provided with cross slats 11 and with corner braces 12, as a cheap and effective method of stiffening and holding them in shape. The tills are disposed between the upwardly projecting sides of the base frame and are pivoted at 13 to the rear standards 3, it being noted in this connection that by reason of the rearward and upward inclination of said standards, the till above the base frame projects slightly beyond the rear end of said frame and that each till above another likewise projects rearwardly beyond the underlying one. By this arrangement the tills when tilted will more clearly and effectively display the mattresses arranged upon them as hereinafter more particularly referred to and for convenience in tilting the tills or restoring them to their original positions they are provided at their front ends with handles 14.

When the tills are arranged as shown in full lines Fig. 2, the mattresses occupy horizontal positions. From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a mattress storing and display rack possessing the features of advantage enumerated as desirable and ing upwardly and forwardly, and bars bracing the first-named sets of bars in rigid relation to each other and the base, sheaves carried by the upwardly and forwardly extending bars, tills arranged one above the other and all but the undermost one pivoted at their rear ends to and between the upwardly and rearwardly inclined bars, the pivotal point of each till occupying a plane rearward of the pivotal point of the till next below it, so that the front end of each till shall project slightly forward of the front end of the next till above it, a series of flexible devices extending over said sheaves and attached to the pivoted tills, and counter balance weights also attached to said flexible devices.

2. A mattress storing and display rack, comprising a frame embodying a substantially horizontal base, standards extending upwardly and rearwardly from the sides of said frame at each side and near the front and rear ends thereof, the front standards projecting to a higher plane than the rear ones, bars secured to the upper ends of said inclined standards and projecting forwardly beyond the front ones and in conjunction with said standards constituting upwardly projecting sides for the base frame, a brace to stiffen each of said sides, a cross bar connecting said frames near the upper ends of the front ificlined standards, sheaves arranged at each side of and carried by the said frame, a series of tills arranged one above the other between the sides of said frame and pivoted at their rear ends to the rear inclined standards, flexible devices engaging said sheaves and attached to said tills, and counter balance weights attached to the opposite ends of said connections.
