Description

'L. G. LEASE,
CONCRETE BLOCK AND WALL.
APPLICATION FILED 001 .11. 1909.

CONCRETE BLOOK AND WALL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 11, 1909.
Patented Jan. 2, 1912. Serial No. 522,067.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN G. LEASE, citizen of the United States, residing at Howland, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Ii'nprovements in Concrete Blocks and lValls, of which the following is a speoification.
, This invention has for its object an improved construction of wall and building blocks or tiles therefor, the said blocks being formed on one or more faces with a groove or depression designed to produce ventilating openings through the walls. And the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is. a sectional perspective view of a portion of a wall constructed with my improved building blocks, illustrating an arrangement whereby longitudinally and substantially continuous air passages are formed in the wall. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one form of block employed; Fig. 3 is. a similar view of a modified form of block; and, Fig. 4 is an end view of one arrangement of the blocks hereinafter specifically referred to.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated .in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates one form or embodiment of my improved building block or tile, which may be made of any desired substance such as concrete, or vitrified materials as desired. The blocks 1 are formed in one Wall with :an inwardly curved longitudinally extending portion, as indicated at 2, producing on the exterior of the block a longitudinally extending groove or depression 3, which is preferably a little deeper than the wall or side of the block, as shown. By producing this groove, as shown in the drawing, it will he noted that the wall of the block or tile is not weakened, but is substantially of uniform thickness. It is to be understood that these grooves may be formed in one or more of the walls of the block or tile, and may be formed either along the median line of the wall of the block or at either side of such line. The grooves 3 are preferably semicircular in cross section. Obviously the blocks may be arranged in the building wall with the grooves of the two adjoining blocks meeting so as to produce a cylindrical ventilating opening as illustrated in Fig. 4. Or, the grooved wall of one block may be arranged contiguous to the straight or plane walls of the two adjacent blocks, so as to rection of the arrows in Fig. 1.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings, it
is obvious that a wall built of blocks constructed in accordance with my invention may be provided with ventilating openings extending longitudinally and continuously in any desired course by laying .the blocks end to' end, and that any one or more of the courses may be provided with transversely extending ventilating openings by placing any one or more of the blocks transversely of the wall, that is, with its groove extending from front to rear.
Obviously my invention is not limited to a hollow block or tile, nor to a hollow block or tile as illustrated in Fig. 1. For instance, as illustrated in Fig. 3, a modified form of block designated 1, may be used. This block maybe provided with a web 4 and with the grooves 3 in opposite Walls at opposite sides of the Web.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is:
A wall constructe of a plurality of courses of hollow blocks, the blocks being open from end to end and those of each course being laid end to end whereby to afford an uninterrupted air passage extending the en tire length of each course, each of the blocks being formed in one wall with a depression extending the entire length thereof, that portion of the wall of each block opposite the depression being plane, the blocks of each course being arranged alternately with the depressed Wall of each block presented in the same direction as the plane wall of tha adjacent blocks of the same course, the i In testimony Where-0f afiix my signature depresslon of each block reglstermg m presence of two 'WLtHSSSQS. thrmw'hout a partion of it lPiwth Witb *lw ZMAN .LE-AF. lhs. dapressmn of a related block 0f an ad acent v b J L 1 course whereby to establlsh commumcatlon Wl'tnessesz at intervals between the air passages of the G120.
