LAND-GRADER.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 20, 1911. Serial No. 622,379.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADoLPH P. DARTENAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dixon, in the county of Solano, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Land-Graders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application. a

This invention relates to improvements in scrapers or land graders of all kinds and characters and particularly to those used in grading roads, road beds, levees, and leveling irrigated lands, etc., the object of the invention being to produce a projecting fender or wing means adapted to project from the sides of the bowl of the scraper in order to form a box like structure which will carry a greater amount of dirt than the ordinary bowl of the scraper would and still permit the bowl to be emptied as easily and quickly as it could be done without such fenders.

A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.

These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.

The figure in the drawings is a perspective view of my complete mechanism.

Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings 1 designates the bowl of the scraper and 2 the pulling rods thereon. The form of scraper structure shown is that substantially covered by my United States Patent No. 829,829 and the invention is particularly adapted to this form of scraper;

In applying my lmproved fender mechanism, I provide fenders 8 flexibly mounted on pins 4 in the pull rods 2 which fenders project into the sides of the bowl 1 as at a but are not fastened to said bowl.

5 are rods flexibly secured to the outside of the ends of the bowl 1 as at 6 and also flexibly connected at the points 4 to the pull rods 2. The fenders 3 are flexibly joined to said rods 5 by means of guide straps 7 secured to the fender 3 and projecting around the rods 5. In practice the fenders 3 form a bigger box which enables a greater amount of dirt to be carried by the scraper. When the bowl is tilted to empty the load, the flexible connection between the fender 3 and the rods 5 permits this to be done in an unimpeded manner and at the same time permits the fender 3 and rods 5 to be lifted so as to permit the load to be readily dumped.

From the foregoing description it will readily appear that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.

While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice, such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the inventionj Having thus describedmy invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A scraper comprising pull rods, a bowl transversely mounted on said pull rods, fenders flexibly connected with said pull rods and projecting into the inside of the ends of said bowl, rods flexibly connected with said pull rods and the outside ends of said bowl and means flexibly connecting said rods to said fenders as described.
