J' CLYDE SMITH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PIANO-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 1912.
Application filed August 3, 1908. Serial No. 446,605.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J CLYDE SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piano-Cases, of which the following, taken in connection with the drawing, is a description.
My invention has for its object the production of a lining for piano casings designed to prevent the dry superheated air of steam heated or furnace heated houses from coming into contact with the actions and sounding boards of pianos.
Much difficulty has heretofore been experienced during the summer months by certain parts of the actions of the piano being swollen with dampness which causes them to stick and sometimes to refuse to work at all, and later when the weather is cold and the houses are heated, the same parts are rattling from over dryness.
My invention is designed to overcome this difliculty by providing a lining for the entire casing of the piano, which lining shall be of moisture proof material which will be sufficient to keep the inside of the piano at practically the same degree of humidity the year around, and at the same time not make any appreciable difference in the tone of the instrument.
A further object in providing such a lining is to keep dust and moths out of the piano and to prevent the parts from rusting which is often caused by dampness.
My improved casing is very simple in construction, can be easily placed in position, and is efiectual in all respects in the performance of its functions, and in the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one orm of arrangement showing the lining applied to a piano casing, and in these drawings- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through a piano casing, and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention A represents the piano casing, which may be of either metal or wood and of any size, shape or design desired. B is one of the keys and C the extension of the action; these forming no part of my invention no detailed description thereof will be given.
C is a lining or covering which is preferably a light, thin, moisture proof air tight material which may be of fabric, rubber, or a combination of both, or any other material suitable for such purpose, which is secured to the piano casing by means of an adhesive, which renders the casing practically air tight, and thereby keeps the interior of the piano at the same degree of humidity in all changes of temperature. This lining will in no way interfere with the tone of the piano, or require any change in the construction of the casings now in use.
I claim An upright piano casing having an air tight and moisture proof fabric lining secured to the inside of the front and top thereof and covering the back and bottom of the casing, said lining being secured to the casing whereby the humidity therein is permanently maintained at practically the same degree, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J CLYDE SMITH.
