' UNITED STATES PATENT -OFFICE.
JOHN M. VE ASEYfOF DEsvEa, coLoRADo TERRITORY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CASTERS'" FoR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 101,328, dated March 29, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jornv M. VEASEY, of
Denver,in the county of Arapahoe an d Territory pintles of the casters, as hereinafter specified.
In the drawing, A is the end supportingframe of a sewing-machine or other table; a a, the feet on which the frame rests. b b are re cesses in such feet. 0 c are casters placed within such recesses, the stems d of the casters being placed in vertical holes in the feet a, instead ofbeing inclosed, as is usually the case, in caps that are themselves attached to the legs of articles of furniture. -I dispense en- 'Iir'ely with all the usual accompaniments of I I casters and insert the stems d directly in the feet-.1 This makes a firm connection and one not-liable to. break. The stems (1 project upward into recesses e e inthe upper parts of the .feet a, far enough to allow of snfiicient play of the casters. The ends of levers h h project into the'recesses 6, so as to act on the tops of The levers h h are pivoted to the frame at'the pointsii, and project toward and meet at the center of the frame A, where they.
are jointed togetherin any suitable manner. A handle, h, extends onward from the free extremity of one of the levers h and beyond the edge of the frame A, so as to be convenient for manual grasp.
When not in operation the levers h lie nearlyhorizontal on the inside of the frame A. This is when the table rests solely on its feet and the casters are wholly withdrawn into the recesses b. Previous to moving the table the handle it is raised, bringing the ends of the levers h down upon the tops of the stems d, Iowering the casters and raising the table-legs entireiy off the floor. A hook, I, is placed on the inside of the frame A to sustain the handle it when the table rests on the casters. When the table has been moved to the required place, on simply lifting the handle it out of the hook l the weight of the table settles it to the floor and raises the casters.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The levers hv h, pivoted upon the frame and provided with curved ends projcctin g into chambers e e, and pressing on the piutles d d of the casters, whose pintles project into the chambers, as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the subject-matter of the above claim, of the hook Z, all being arranged as and for the purpose specified.
- JOHN M. VEASEY.
