To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK L. G. STRAUBEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Green Bay, in the county of Brown and State of Visconsim'have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vertical-Filing Drawers, of which the fol-. lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in a filing drawer in which letters, bills and other papers are to be filed vertically, and commonly between indexed guide cards.
I have used as a basis for my improvement the drawer with hinged front, the adjustable spring follower, the rod and clutch mechanism, the oscillating rod as shown and described in my Patent N0.v 799,689 dated Sept. 19, 1905. I have added the various features herein described, the additions and changes forming the basis of my present claims for patent rights.
The object of my improvement is to provide in a drawer having a hinged front and an adjustable spring-follower, a mechanism which will cause a positive reciprocating action upon the hinged wing of the adjustable spring follower, and that such mechanism shall be as nearly free from noise and friction as possible in a. device of this nature. I attain this object by means of the mechanism illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which figure 1 is a vertical section of the drawer, exposing the left hand inner side with parallel bar and a section throughthe spring follower. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the left hand side of the drawer upon line A A. Fig. 3 is a View of the follower showing the tilting device adjusted to the end of the base and hinged wing of the adjustable spring follower. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the drawer.
Similar figures refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The hinged front 1., sides 2, back 3, and bottom 4-constitute the framework of the drawer. The base 5, clutch 6, wing 7, spring 8, and hinged lever 9, the latter two parts being also used on the opposite side of the drawer, constitute the parts of the adjustable spring follower. With a similar arrangement on each side of the drawer the connecting rod 10, oscillating lever 11, stationary bar 12, and oscillating bars 13, and parallel bars 14 constitute the mechanism between the hinged front and the adjustable spring follower by which the hinged wing of the follower is caused to be thrown or tilted back when the front is drawn forward into the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1.
As shown in Fig. 1' the drawer front 1 is hinged at its lower part at 15, and the connecting rods '10 pivotally secured thereto on opposite-ends as at 16, and the other ends of saidn'ods pivotally secured to the upper extensions of the oscillating levers'll; the latter and the oscillating bars 13 are also pivotally secured to the parallel bars 14 in line, the pivotal centers of oscillating levers and bars being uniformly spaced.
\Vhen the front of the drawer is closed the upper part of oscillating lever 11 is in the vertical position shown by full lines and the o.--icillatin'g bars 13 and parallel bar 14 are in the positions drawn. hen the hinged drawer front -is pulled outward as shown by dotted lines the movement causes a downward movement of parallel bar 14, the changed positions being shown by the dotted lines and also the position shown in Fig. 2. i
The spring follower comprises a base 5, a wing 7, springs 8 and clutch 6. The mech- 111118111 described in the foregoing is substantially the same as covered by Patent No. 799,689 with the following exceptions 1st. \Vhere I formerly used spring hinges I now use end hinges and the spring action is secured by means of a flat steel hoop as shown at 8 the lower end being fastened to a plate 18 on the base 5 of the follower, the upper end being secured to the screw plate portion 19 of the end hinged lever 9.
2nd. Where I formerly secured the upper ends of oscillating bars 13, and the center of oscillating bar 11 to the sides of the drawer I now use a stationary bar 12 which is secured to the side of the drawer, the oscillating lever and bars being pivotally secured to the stationary bar before assembling in the drawer.
3rd. Where I formerly used a plain parallel bar 14 I now use a dove tail slotin the bar as shown clearly in section in Fig. 2.
4th. Where I formerly used a plain flat faced roller to bear against the under side of the parallel bar I now use a flanged roller 20, the flange of this roller running in the dovetail groove 21 of the parallel bar 14 which holds the roller in place, enough lay I being allowed to prevent the binding of the roller.
5th. Lever 9 as formerly used was a plain L shaped flat piece of steel secured at one end to the wing of follower and carrying the roller at the other end. I now make these levers with a downwardly projecting flange 22 which is pivotally secured to the ends of the base 5 and these levers now serve the double purpose of a lever and hinge.
I base my claims for a patent on the stationary bar 12, dovetail form of parallel bar 14, roller 20, flat spring 8 and hinged lever 9.
The present arrangement enables me to secure the following desired objects First. A positive lever action on the wing of follower when the drawer front is swung without dependence upon the spring. When the drawer front is pulled outwardly the parallel bar is forced downwardly and with it the roller end of hinged lever. 'VVhen the drawer front is again pushed to the vertical position the parallel bar is raised and with it the roller end of hinged lever.
Second. The roller being larger on the flanged outer ends are held in place by the dovetail form of the parallel bars and give no trouble by running off the track.
Third. By means of the improved form of hinged levers I am able to drop the lower edge of the hinged wing of the follower nearly to the bottom of the drawer instead of placing it on top of the follower. The combination of a vertical filing drawer having a hinged front, a parallel bar mounted at'the side of the drawer for upward and downward movement, and provided with a dovetail groove,'operating connections between said bar and the front of the drawer, a follower base adapted to slide longitudinally of the drawer, a tilting wing pivotally mounted thereon, said mounting including a lever having a flanged roller adapted to engage said dovetail groove for tilting the follower wing, and a spring in connection with said wing and adapted to hold the same normally in an upright position, substantially as described.
