COMBINATION SCHOOL DESK AND SEAT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK WV. ELSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oskaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Combination School Desk and Seat, of which the following is a speciflcation.

This.invention is a combination school desk and seat and has for its object to provide an article of this character which is simple in construction rendering it cheap to manufacture, and which is durable and eflicient in use.

Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for adjusting the desk and seat to accommodate pupils of various heights.

A further object is to provide novel means for folding the seat and desk when not in use.

lVith the above objects in view this invention is embodied in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, and in which,

Referring specifically to the drawings, the standards of the desk comprise angular strips of metal bent to an inverted V-shape, forming the forward members or sections 13 and the rear members or sections 14. One of the flanges of the said members are disposed toward each other and the other flanges of the said members are disposed inwardly. The respective members or legs 13 and 14 are provided with the feet 32 and 33 to serve as a means for securing the standards to the floor, platform or the like. The standards being bent from angle iron renders same both cheap to manufacture, and substantial in construction. Suitable slats 34 are secured to the upper ends of the members 13 of the standards in any suitable manner forming a back thereon.

The seat comprises a pair of brackets 6 on which are secured suitable slats 5 in any manner which is found convenient. The rear ends of the brackets 6 are upturned, as shown at 17 which upturned ends 17 each lies directly within-the inner flanges Specification of Letters Patent.

of the members 13. Lugs 18 project from the ends 17 behind the inner flanges of the members 13 and lugs 19 project from the rear ends of the brackets 6 in front of the said flanges to form a sliding engagement of the rear portion of the seat with the standards. These lugs 18 and 19 may be provided with rollers thereon to reduce the friction upon the rear portion of the seat, being moved up and down on the standard. The members 13 are provided with elongated vertical slcts 9 and a series of notches 10 along one side of the said slots, and blocks 8 carrying the bolts 11 are adjustably secured to the said members by having the bolts thereof pass through the said slots, they both being provided with lugs 12 which are adapted to engage in the notches 10 when the bolts are secured in position by nuts thereon to retain the block in its adjusted position, the block being adjustable by loosening the bolts to disengage the lugs 12 from the notches 10. A link brace 7 is pivoted to each of the blocks 8 and to the intermediate portion of each of the brackets 6. Thus as the front portion of the seat is raised the rear portion is depressed, being guided by the lugs 18 and 19 along the members 13, and the braces 7 acting as a fulcrum which shifts inwardly to bring the seat compactly against the members 13 of the standards. When raised, the rear edge thereof is adapted to bear on the lower end of the back thus closing the space between the seat and back to prevent pencils and other articles from dropping between the seat and back. It will'also be noted that when the seat is swung upward the lugs 18 and 19 bind on the inner flanges of the members 13 and serve to retain the seat in position.

The desk comprises a top 21 and the book pocket 22 on the bottom thereof as is customary in desks of this character. The desk is provided with a lug 24 on each side thereof and at the top of the front portion of the desk, which lugs project behind the inner flanges of the member 14and the desk is provided with a lower lug 28 on each side thereof which is adapted to bear on the outer face of the said flanges, these lugs 24 and 28 also being preferably provided with rollers. The members 14 are provided with elongated vertical slots 25 in their inner flanges and a series of notches 26 along the edges of the said slots, and blocks 27 are mounted adjustably on the said members by means of bolts 11 carried thereby which pass through the said slots and are provided with the lugs 12 for engaging the notches 26, similar to the means for adjusting the blocks 8 above described. Link braces 20 are pivoted to the blocks 27 and to the sides of the desk, thus permitting the outer or rear end of the desk to be raised to bring the desk in position against the members 14:, the forward end of the desk being guided up and down on the members 14:.

It will therefore be noted that upon the bolts 11 being loosened that the desk can be adjusted vertically on the standards to accommodate various children and that upon the seat and desk being adjusted downwardly they are also shifted away from the center of the standards for the purpose of bringing the adjacent desk and seat together as well as lowering the same to accommodate smaller children, and vice versa. It will also be noted that upon the desk being folded upon the standards, the rear end of the desk pocket which is open, is brought upward which prevents the books and other objects held therein from falling out. A cross bar 23 is secured between the intermediate portions of the sections 13 and 14 of the standards at a point between the ends of the slots 9 and diagonal braces 15 are secured between the said cross bars and the upper ends of the opposite standards. These cross bars are provided with turn buckles 16 whereby they may be loosened or tightened as desired or necessary. The cross bars 23 being arranged between end of the slots 9 reinforces the sections 13 weakened by the said slots.

If it is desired the link braces 7 and 20 may be secured to the seat and desk, respectively, at various points to change the angle of inclination thereof as may be desired.

What is claimed as new is In a device of the character described, the combination with a pair of standards having elongated slots therein and a series of notches along the said slots of a seat having means at the rear portion thereof for slidably engaging the standards and when raised to bind against the standards, a pair of blocks, a bolt carried by each of the said blocks and passing through the said slots of the standards and provided with lugs adapted to engage in the said slots, and link braces pivoted to the said seat and to the said blocks.
