DAVID S. ROBINSON, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA,
Letters Patent No. 101,313, dated March 29, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHIMNEY-TOPS.
The Schedule referred to in 'these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID S. Ronnvson, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Chimney- Top; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in whiclr- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved chimney-top.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to chimneys, and consists in the following improvements, namely:
One improvement which I claim in my present invention consists in the means employed to hold the cap or base-plate in a fixed and secure position; a second is the construction of said cap; a third is the improvement over the common construction and arrangement of the hood; and a fourth consists in the means employed to support the standards and prevent the hood from being lifted off.
The chimney-cap A is made ofsheet metal, and
formed with a downward-projecting flange, (1, around its edge, so that it can be fitted upon and securely fastened to the top of a chimney, B.
The plate 'A has an aperture corresponding to that in the chimney. At the ends of the aperture are formed'on the cap upward-projecting triangular standards b b, which were not cut out with the aperture, but were left on the material and then bent up, as shown.
C is the hood. It is made from a plate of sheet metal, bent at an angle of about eighty degrees, more or less, and suspended from the pointed ends of the standards I), as shown, so that one-half will hang on each side.
The standards are strengthened by braces dd, which are rivet-ed with their lower arms to the surface of the plate A, and whose vertical parts stand against the outer faces of v the standards. i
The upper ends of the braces are connected with each other by a bar, e, which is thus above the hood, preventing the same from beinglifted off the standard and holding the latter in the proper vertical positions.
The wind striking directly or obliquely against one leaf of the hood, forces such leaf against the lip f, projecting around the side of the flue, and throws the other leaf up, allowing, thereby, the free escape of smoke on the side which is not disturbed by the wind.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A shcet metalcap, A, for chimney-tops, having an aperture near the center surrounded by lips f f, and on the edges thereof the projecting flanges aa, to clasp firmly around the chimney and hold the cap or base-plate in a fixed position.
2. The base-plate A, constructed as above described, having triangular standards b 1) formed of the same piece of metal, and turned up in the manner and for the purpose described.
7 3. The hood 0, formed of sheet metal, bent at an angle of about eighty degrees, to form two equal sides, and suspended from the points of standards I) I), in the manner and for the purpose set forth. 7
4. The combination of plate Ab b and hood G, constructed and shaped as set forth, with the braces dand bar 0, arranged as specified, the former to support the standards and the latter to prevent'the hood from being lifted otf, all as shown and described.
D. S. ROBINSON.
