To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, VVYILLIAM H. PIKE, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at South Orange, Essex count-y, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useiful Improvements in Attachments for Cal culating-lviachines, oi which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to attachments for calculating machines of that char: acter in which the platen or surface against which the printing devices of the recording mechanism act is mounted so that it may be moved to and from operative relation to said printing devices, for the purpose of permitting inspection of the record at any time. An example of sucli a machine is shown in Patent No, 595,86 issued Decem her 21, 1897, and in the accompanying dram ings the present invention is shown as applied to a machine of the type illustrated in said patent.
In operating machines of the character referred to, it is found that frequently an operator will move the platen of the recording mechanism from its operative position tor the purpose of inspecting the record, for example, and will then proceed to operate the machine before returning the platen to the position in which it will receive the impression from the type of the printing mechanism. This causes an imperfect record of the operations of the machine That is, the printed record. will not include all of the items which have been accumulated hy the adding mechanism, as it will not contain any record of such itemsas accumulated while the platen is in inoperative position.
lhe object of the present invention is to provide means by which this objection to machines of the character referred to as heretofore constructed will be overcome, and it will he impossihleto actuate the machine when the platen is in inoperative position.

Referring to the drawing, designates the casing of the machine which is arranged the mechanism, which it is not necessary for the purposes of this invention to describe in detail. As is well known, in using a machine of the character illustrated in the drawing, the keys 2, corresponding to a number which it is desired to accumulate, are depressed and thereafter there is shiftedan actuating device in the form of a depressible starting key 4, or of a handle 3, the movement of which results in the operation of the working shaft which actuates the mechanism by which the amount or number represented by the depressed keys 2 will be accumulated by the registering devices and a record thereof produced by the recording devices which include suitable type carriers 5 and a platen 6.,
in order that the operator may inspect the record made by the machine, the platen 6 may, by means of the handle 7, beswung rearwardiy from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 into that indicated by dotted lines in the same figure, lVhenthe parts are in this position, it will be seen that if the machineis operated, the type on the carriers 5 cannot produce any record upon the paper carried by the platen 6, and therefore if the machine were operated with the parts in this position, the only effect would be to actuate the register devices and the record produced by the machine would, therefore, be incomplete,
To positively prevent any actuation oi the machine when the' platen is the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, the following means may be employed: A bell crank lever 8 is suitably mounted on the frame of the machine, and is provided at the free end of its up or arm with a projecting'finger 9,.on which the platen 6 rests when in operative position with relation to the other members of the recording mecha nism, The other arm it of said bell crank is adapted to engage an arm 11 of a similar lever mounted on the machine frame to rock about a vertical axis, and having its other arm 12 connected by a link 13 with one arm of a pivotally mounted stop device 14 provided with a stop 15 adapted to move to and from the path of a lug 16 adjacent the lower end of an arm 1? that is connected to and adapted to he rocked with the handle A spring 18 constantly tends to move the stop device 1.4 about its pivpt into a posltion where the stop 15 will be in the path of the lug 16, but when the platen 6 ism operative relation to the other members of the recording mechanism, the upper end of the bell crank lever 8, being depressed thereby, the stop 15 is, through the aforesaid lever and link 18, held in the position shown in the drawings in which it is below the lug 16, and therefore offers no obstruction to the movement of the handle 3. When, however, the platen is moved rearwardly into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, it passes from engagement with the bell crank lever 8 and the stop 15 is instantly elevated, by the, action of the spring 18, into position to obstruct the lug 16 and thereby positively prevent movement of the handle 3 and consequently any actuation of the machine.
It is customary to provide power mechanism for actuating the machine in addition to the handle 3, such mechanism being released through the actuation of the starting key 4. In order that operation of this starting key may be positively prevented when the platen is in inoperative position relative to the other members of the recording mechanism, the link 13 is projected beyond the stop carrier 14 and connected to a stop 19 pivotally mounted in the machine, and movable to and from a position beneath a lug 20 on the stem of the key 4. The stops 15, 19, therefore, move together, and it will be seen that whenever the platen is in the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 6, the spring 18 will hold the stops 15 and 19 in the paths of the lugs 16, 20 and neither the handle 3 nor key 4 can be operated to actuate the machine until the platen has been restored to operative relation with the other members of the recording mechanism.
It will be evident that the present invention may be embodied in various forms other than that illustrated.
What is claimed is,
1. The combination with the actuating means of an accumulating machine, of recording mechanism including a platen movable to and from the other members of said mechanism, the operability of said actuating means being controlled by said movable platen.
2. Ihe combination with the actuating means of an accumulating machine, of recording mechanism one member of which is movable to and from operative relation to the other members, and means for-preventing the operation of the actuating means when the movable member of the recording mechanism is in inoperative position. v
3. The combination in an accumulating machine of recording mechanism having a member movable to and from (operative relation to other members of said mechanism, and actuating means for the machine including a rock shaft, and means controlled by the said movable memberfor preventing movement of said shaft when said movable member of the recording mechanism is in inoperative position. 7
4. The combination with the actuating means of a calculating machine of recording mechanism including a member movable to and from operative relation to other members of said mechanism, a pivotally mounted stop device, and means whereby when the said movable member of the recording mechanismis in inoperative position said stop device will be held in position to prevent operation of said actuating means.
5. The combination with a calculating machine of recording mechanism having a member movable to and from operative relation to other members of said mechanism, and a stop device, means acting to hold said device in position to prevent the machine from being operated to accumulate items, and supplemental means extending into the path of the movable member of the recording mechanism and adapted to move said stop device to inoperative position when said movable member is in operative position.
6. In a machine of the character described, the combination with adding mechanism and a paper carriage movable into and out of effective position; of means for automatically disabling the adding mechanism when said paper carriage is out of such-position.
7. In a machine of the character described,
the combination with adding and printing mechanism and a platenmovable into and out of position for receiving imprints from the printing mechanism, of means for automatically preventing operation of the adding and printing mechanism as an incident to, movement of the platen out of position for receiving imprints.
