Be it known that I, ARTHUR PENTEcosT, a subject of the King of Great Britain,residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Adding-Machines, of which the following is a speciiication.
vThe present invention relates to an attachment for adding machines by means of whi ch the operator will be notified of the completion of the recording of a predetermined number of items by the machine. Such an attachnient is of considerable benefit in connection with calculations required to be expressed in a plurality of columns or tables of e ual length or each containing the same num er of items.
The object of the present invention is to provide an attachment for the purpose stated which will be operated from the re-f cording mechanism of the machine, whereby vit will accuratelyrecord or indicate the number of items listed and will be independent of and therefore permit variations in the paper feed or s pacingl between items if desired.
In the accompanying drawings,-Fi^gure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of an adding machine having the present invention ap-' plied thereto; Fig. 2 is an elevation,` partly in section, of a portion of the machine; Fig. 3 is a plan view; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal, vertical, sectional view, on the line 4-4 'of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view through a portion of the machine in which the invention is illustrated as being embodied; and Fig. 6 is a plan' view of a portion' of the accumulating devicesshown in Fig. 5.
While the invention is applicable to adding, or calculating machines of various forms, it is shown in the accompanying drawings as applied to a machine of the character invented by William H. Pike,'Jr., and illustrated and described in Letters Patent Nos. 763,692 and 791,941, granted June 28, 1904 and June 6, 1905, respectively. As the present invention is not limited to use with such a machine, however, the latter has been illustrated more or less conventionally and only suiciently to make clear the manner in which the attachment is applied to and operated by said machine. The machine referred to includes a recording mechanism comprising a platen 1, a plurality of type carriers 2 arranged side by side and each supporting a series of numeral type adapted to be moved toward the platen by suitable hammers 3, there being one of such hammers for each of the said type carriers.- The positioning of the type carriers, or either of them, to bring the desired type thereon into position hetween the platen 1 and the co-operating hammer 3 is controlled by numeral keys 4 arranged in rows in a key board and the keys of each row controlling the action of one of the type carriers. By properly depressing the keys 4 representing the digits of a number to be recorded and actuating. the machine, the type carriers corresponding to the numerical values represented by the rows of keys in which the depressed keys are situated will be caused to assume positions in which the type thereon corresponding to. the de- -pressed keys are brought into position beneath the hammers 3, and by the action of the latter, and a suitable inking device, the desired number will he recorded on a sheet or strip of paper supported by the platen.
Each type carrier is connected to a bar or strip 48 which is provided at its free end with a rack 49 adapted during its reciprocation in one direction, as hereinafter described, to
engage and turn' a pinion 50 connected-with a numbered wheel v51 of the accumulating devices of the machine. The type carriers-2 and strips 48 connected therewith are moved in one direction through the action of a cam 52, mounted on the main power shaft of the machine, on a swinging frame including a bar or plate 53 extending transversely across the series of type carriers. Connected with each oi the strips 48 is a spring 54 acting to move said strip and its connected type carrier in a direction opposite that in which they are moved by said cam 52. The eX- tent of movement of each strip 48 and its type carrier 2, under the' influence oi the spring 54, is determined by the engagement of the de ressed key 4, in the row corresponding to saidv strip, and a lateral projection or stud 55 on the strip.
Normally the accumulating wheels 51 are 2 seance held in such position that the pinions 50 thereof are out of engagement with the racks 49. and said wheels are moved to bring the pinions into engagement with the racks upon the completion of the movement of the strips 48 under 'the influence of their springs 54, and when said strips are returned to their normal osition by the action of the cam 52, the adding wheels 51 will be properly turned to accumulate the amount represented by the depressed keys4 and which amount Ihas been recordedl as above indicated.
The adding wheels are carried by a swing ing frame one member 56 .of which is connected to the lower end of a toggle 57 which is in turn connected by a link 58 with an arm 59 having' a laterally projectin pin eir-v tending into the path of two shoul ers on a swinging plate 60. By this means the link 58 is reciprocated and the toggle 57 adjusted to move the adding wheel pinions 'to and from the 'racks 49 at eachoperation of the machine as explained in detail in said Letters Patent.
1t will be understood, by reference to the aforesaid patents, that the several type carriers 2 each corresponds to or represents a certainl numerical value, and that the harnmers 3 are so constructed and related that whenever the machine is operated tol effect an item record all'of the hammers co-operating 'with type carriers representing values less than the highest value expressed by the depressed keys 4 will be operated. That is at each operation of the recording mechanism the hammer co-operating with thetype carrier representing the lowest numerical value will be operated. The said machine also includes two special keys 5, 6,'the former of which is o erated when recording a subtotal, and t le latter being operated when a total is to be recorded.
Having thus brieily outlined the constructionand operation of the recording and accumulating mechanisms of the machinel to which the attachment constituting the present invention is shown as. applied in the accompanying drawin said attachment will now be more particu arly described.
Mounted on the casing 7 which incloses the recording mechanism of` the machine is a base plate 8. From said plate rises a stud or ost on which'is sup orted a revoluble dis 9 having a toothedpperiphery.. The disk 9 is provided on its lower surface with a sprin barrel or casing 10 within which is arrange a coiled spring, one endof said spring being secured to the post about which the disk 9 rotates and the other end being adapted to contact with an `inwardly extending projection onthe spring bai'reli. Preferably the spring barrel is provided "-.vith an inwardly extending projection 11, 'fhich, as shown in Fig. 3 hasoppositel..T beveled 'aces and the outer end of the spring is provided vplate 8. Motion is imparte with an enlarged portion 12 having similarly inclined faces, whereby, when the spring has been placed under the maximum tension desired, a further rotation of the disk 9 and the.
barrel 10 will not break or otherwise damage the spring.

The arm 22 may e mounted in anysuitable manner. As shown it is supported to turn about the axis ofthe disk and ,provided on its lower race with a pin or stud adapted to enter either of a series of sockets 23 formed in the disk 9 and corresponding in number and location to the peripheral teeth of said disk.- Preferably the disk is provided with 100 teeth and adj acent the sockets 28 is arranged a series of numerals each being adjacent one of said sockets and indicatin thev relative position 'of such socket and t e cprres onding tooth in the series. The. arm 22 is alto provided with a pointer 24 which is of such length as to travel ,over the series oi numbers on the disk 9 andto indicate with which socket 23 said 'arm is engaged. the indicating arm 22, which is preferably made of resilient material, is adjusted so as to Aengage the socket 23 designated by the numeral 25, which, as above described, is separated from the zero or starting position of the disk by a distance equal to twenty-five of the peripheral teeth on the disk. At each operation of the recording mechanism the arm 17 will move the arm 13 and feed the disk one tooth, said arm and its pawl 14 returning to their normal position under the influence of the spring 15 when the hammers 3 of the recording mechanism are restored to their elevated positions; and the disk 9 is held from movement under the influence of its power spring, between operations of the recording mechanism, by the holding pawl 18. By such movement of the disk 9 the arm 22 connected therewith is brought into engagement with the finger 21 of the bell hammer 20, and, in `the example assumed, as the twenty-fth step by step movement of the disk is completed said arm 22 will pass from engagement with the finger 21 andthe hammer 20 bein thus released will be forced against the bel 19 by its spring thus notifying the operator that the desired number of items has been recorded by the machine. To provide for readily disengaging the arm 22 from the disk 9 andadjusting it relative to said disk it is provided with a suitable finger piece 22a.
Before the machine is operated to record a second series of items it is necessary that the disk-9 and parts connected therewith be returned to their normal positions.' This return movement is edected through the power of the spring contained inthe barrel 10,
which has been placed under tension bythe previous stepvby step movement of the disk; and in order to allow said spring to actuate the disk it is necessary that both the holding and feeding pawls be disengaged therefrom. Preferably the feeding pawl is normally held from engagement with the teeth of the disk 9 by a pin 28 on the base plate 1, said pin being v so arranged that the curved inner face of the paWl 14 bears thereon and when the arm 13 is in contact with the stop 16, the point or free end of said pawl 15 is clear of the disk 9. To withdraw the holding dog 18 means oper ated by either the sub-total or ,total7 keys, 5, 6, of the adding machine are 'employed. These means include a pivotally mounted release arm 29, the free end of which is adapted to engage the pawl 18 and the other end of Which is connected by suitable links and levers with the said sub-total and ltotal keys.
As shown the shaft on which the release l arm 29 is mounted has an arm 35 connected by a link 36 with an arm of a bell-crank 37 the other arm of which is connected through a link 38 with an arm 39 on a shaft 40 mounted in suitable bearings on the base of the machine. l Said shaft 4() is also provided with the aforesaid patent No. 763,692. The said link 43 is connected with a lever 45 and the sub-total and total keys 5, 6, are respectively provided with pins 46 and 47 adapted to operate said lever in the manner described in said patent. Therefore whenever either the "sub-total or total" key is depressed the detaining dog 18 will be moved from engagement with the disk 9, which, together with its engaged arm 22, will be returned to normal position by its power spring. The finger 21 of the signal mechanism is pivot-ally mounted so that it will yield and offer no obstruction to this return or restoring movement of the arm 22.
An important advantage attained by employing the sub-total. and total keys to operate the' release mechanism is that either of said keys, when operated, is held in its depressed position until a full cycle of movement of the machine is completed, as eX- plained in the aforesaid patent No. 763,692, there will be suflicient time for the disk 9 to come to rest, even after any slight rebound due to the sudden contact of the lever 25 withthe pins 26, 27, before the pawl 18 enreadily understood from the foregoing de-v scription in' connection with the drawin s, and theadvantages thereof appreciated. y actuating the indicating disk from the recording mechanism there is no possibility of including more or less than the desired number of items in any column and the disk is always returned to its zero position when either a sub-total or total of the previously IOO IOS
listed items is recorded. It is possible to thus obtain an accurate division of a given number of items regardless of the space or distance separating successive items. In other words, by operating the indicating attachment independently of the paper feeding mechanism the latter may be adjusted to provide any desired distance between items.
It will be noted that the stationary pointer 30 in connection with the toothed and numbered disk 9 forms an accurate registerl of the number of operations of the recording mechanism and that by the operation of either the "sub-total or total keys the diskL is returned to the normal or zero position. Therefore an operator can, without employing the indicating arm 22, or independently thereof, instantly determine the number of operations of the recording mechanism which have occurred since the last sub-total or total was recorded. And as by operating either `special key 5 or 6 the parts are returned to normal position it is possible to provide columns of uniform length.
Means are also provided whereby theatl tachinent may be rendered inoperative at the will of the party using the machine. As shown these means include a lever 31 which is suitably fulcrumed on the base plate 8 and has one end projecting beyond the periphery of disk 9 to form a handle by which it may be moved about its pivot. At the 'other' end said lever is provided with an upward extension 32 adapted to bear against one edge ofthe arm 13 by'which the disk 9 is moved. When the lever 31 is in the position shown in Fig. 3 the arm 13 is held against its stop 16 and in the path of movement of the finger 17, whereby at each movement of the latter the arm is rocked and the disk 9 moved step by step as before described. By turning the lever 3.1 on its pivot however the extension 32 thereon will be brought against the arm 13 and the latter will be moved to a position beyond the path of movement of the finger 17. By this means the attachment can be rendered'inoperative or brought into action at the pleasure of the operator.

For this reason the stationary indicator or pointer 30 is provided with a depending pin 3a the free end of which will bear on the upper surface of the arm 22 as the latter passes beneath it and thus cause said arm to always occupy the sameK elevation at the time of its engagement with thefinger 21 of the bell hammer. l`o prevent the pin 34; from odering any obstruction to the movement of the arm 22 the upper surface of said arm is beveled, or reduced in thickness toward bothedges from its central line.
ll am aware that it has been heretofore proposed to provide adding machines with attachments intended or designed to accomplish the results attained by my invention ceases but each of the constructions heretofore proposed or em loyed, so far as known to me, is objectionab e` and ineffective. The devices referred to are operated from or by the paper feeding means and therefore the register or counter is actuated whenever a feed movement is imparted to the paper, whether or not such movement is simultaneous with the accumulating of an item by the adding mechanism or the recording of such an item on the paper. That is, the devices heretofore proposed .do not accurately record the number of items accumulated or listed by the machine but merely indicate the successive feed movements of the paper which may, but do not necessarily, correspond with the number of items accumulated and recorded.
By my invention7 as hereinbefore described, the movable member of the counter or register. is only actuated when the printing hammer corresponding to the lowest denomination is operated in recording an item accumulated and therefore the step by step movements of the counter or register are directly controlled by the accumulating devices. ln other Words, the actuation of the register is entirely independent of the paper feeding devices and the operation of the latter may be varied to change the spacing between items as desired without in the least affecting the operation of the register which accurately records only the items accumulated.
Having described my invention, what l claim is 1. The combination with the recording mechanism of an adding machine including a series of type and means for operating them, of a signal device adapted to be automatically actuated upon and only on the completion of a predetermined number of operations of the recording mechanism. i
2. The combination with the recording mechanism of an adding machine including a series of type and means for operating them, of an'indicating device adapted to be actuated by the type operating devices of the recording mechanism.
3. The combination with the recording mechanism of an adding machine including a series of ty e and means for operating them, of means or producing an audible signal upon and only on the completion of a predetermined number of movements of the type operating devices of the recording mechanism.
