Description
G. PISCHRUPP.
SOFA BED.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 1911.
1,012,537'. Patented Deo. 19. 1911,
N, UNITED sTATEs PATENT ernten.
GEORGE FISCHRUPP,OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SOFA-BED.
To all whom it may concern: 4
Be it known that I, GEORGE FIsoHRUPP, a
citizen of the United States of America, and
a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in .Sofa- Beds, of which the following is a speciiicaber. And' the present improvement has for its 'object to provide a slmple andetlicient structural arrangement and combination of ,parts, wherein the sofa seat and sofa back are -pivotally connected together and are adapted to automatically shift backward in the opening movement of the parts to leave a clear and unobstructedspace above the bed sections after the same are unfolded to provide a bed surface, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings z-Figure 41, is a transverse sectional Aelevation of a sofa-bed with the parts closed together to constitute'a sofa. Fig. 2, is a rear elevation of an end of the same. Fig. 3, is a transverse sectional elevation, with the parts in an open condition to constitute a bed. Fig. 4, is a detail plan view on line azz-12, Fig. 1,.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the several views.
' otally connected to an intermediate section 8, which in turn is pivotally attached to the end walls of the chamber 2 of the base portion of the main housing 1, as described in detail and claimed in my prior application for patent .Serial No. 532,791, tiled December 3, 1009.
In the present improvementthe sofa seat 5 is hinged at its lower rear edge to the back wall of the chamber 2 by hinge connection Specification of Letters Patent.
- Application led April 28, 1911.
Patented Dec. 19, 1911.
Serial No. 623,924.
9, and in adjacent relation to said hinge connection carries the s eci-al hinge member,
hereinafter described, y which the sofa seat is pivotally connected to the lower end of the` sofa back 4. The back 4, in turn is attached in a sliding manner to the upright end member 3 of the frame or housing by studs 10 on the respective ends of the sofa back engaging and sliding in guide grooves 11 formed in said upright members 3, and which grooves are preferably formed with central oblique portions which end in vertical portions at top and bottom as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
In the present. improvement the pivotal connection between the sofa seat 5 and sofa back 4, above referred to, comprises a plurality of substantially U shape bars or members 1Q, fixedly attached at one end to the sofa seat 5, and pivotally attached at the other end to the sofa bac-lt 4 by pivot brackets lil, as shown. The U shape of the bars or members 1Q aforesaid provides at the central portions thereof receiring spaces into which the lower end of the sofa back 4 can pass unhintlered, as ille same moves downward and rearward in the operation of changing a sofa-bed from a sofa position of the parts as illustrated in Fig. l, to the bed position of the parts illustrated in Fig. 3.
Having thus fully described my said invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a sofa-bed, the combination of a main housing, a sofa seat hinged at its rear to said housing, a sofa back having sliding engagement at its .upper end with said housing and pivotally connected at its lower end with the sofa seat by a pivotal connection comprising a substantially U-shaped bar tlxcdly attached at one end to the sofa seat and pivotally connected at the other `end to the sofa back, and adapted to provide a receiving space for the sofa back in an open condition of the sofabed, substantially as set forth.
Q. In a sofa-bed, the combination of a main housing, a sofa seat hinged at its rear end to said housing, a sofa back having sliding engagement at its upper end with said housing by studs on said back engaging in guide grooves in the housing, said guide grooves having a middle oblique portion and vertical top and bottom portions, said sofa back being pivotally connected at its lower end with the sofa seat by a pivotal Signed Chicago, Ulinois, this 25th day of April i911.-
