Be it known that I, LEON Tmis'riwrAN, a subject of the Czar of Russia, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Flat- Iron with Detachable IIandle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a new and improved llat-iron with a detachable handle.

An object of this invention is to provide a detachable handle for a `flat-iron, which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong, durable and readily attached and detached.

A further object of this invention is to provide a detachable handle with means for positively locking it to the body portion of the flat-iron, in such a manner that there is no necessity for undependable springs, which are liable to weaken and get out of order, so that occasionally the weighty body portion of the flat-iron drops from the handle.

These and further objects, together' with the construction and combination of parts, will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this speciiication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in Which-d Figure 1 is a side view in elevation; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section showing in full and dotted lines the various positions of the handle; F ig. 3 is a vertical transverse section; and Fig. 1 is a top plan view, with a portion of the handle broken away to show the underlying structure.

Referring more particularly to the separate parts of this invention as embodied in the form shown in the drawings, 1 indicates the body portion of the flat-iron, which may be of any suitable material, such as castiron properly polished, and nickel-plated if desired, and which may be of any suitable shape, preferably flat on the bottom and somewhat elliptical, with the ends located at the extremities of the longitudinal axis of the ellipse drawn to points, so that the Specification of Letters Patent.

In the top of the body portion 1, there is preferably provided a longitudinally disposed elongated slot 2, which extends at each end under overhangs 3, forming undercut channels 4L.

For the purpose of lifting and manipulating the body portion 1, there is provided a handle 5, which is provided with a semicircular grip G, preferably made of some heat-insulating material, such as wood. Connecting the ends of the grip G, and secured thereto in any suitable manner, as by means of screws 7, there is provided a plate 8 which bridges the gap formed between the ends of the grip Secured to one end of the handle 5 in any suitable manner, and Ineferably l'ixedly attached to the plate 8, as by means cf a rivet 9, there is provided a stationary lock 10, which may be of any suitable character, and is shown in the form of a lug having a beveled surface l1, which forms a wedge end for the lock, adapted to engage in one of the undercut grooves il in the body portion 1. For the purpose of evenly securing the handle 5 to the body portion, there is provided another lock 12, which is likewise provided with a beveled end 13, which forms a wedge adapted to enter into the other undercut groove l1 in the body portion 1. This lock 12 is preferably movably secured to the handle 5, so as to be inserted into the undercut groove, and withdrawn therefrom when it is desired respectively to secure the handle 5 to the body portion and to detach the handle 5 from the body portion. This lock 12 may be movably secured to the handle 5 in any well known manner, as by having a rivet 14 engaging in a longitudinally-extending slot 15 in the plate 8. a

For manipulating the lock 12, there is provided a handle 1G, which is preferably pivotally connected to the rivet 11.1-, and has a heat-insulating iinger-hold 17, whereby it .may be readily manipulated without danger of burning the fingers. The handle 1G is provided with a catch of any suitable character, for the purpose of securing the lock 12 in its locked position. This catch may be of any suitable form, but is shown in the form of a projecting pin or lug 18 on the under side of the handle 16, which is adapted to engage in an arcuate slot 19 formed in the plate 8 and communicating with the slot 15 intermediate the ends thereof. The reason for extending the slot 15 beyond the slot 19 is to permit the pin 18 to slide back when the handle 16 is moved into alinement with the slot 15, so that the lock 12 can readily disengage from the overhang` 3 on the body portion 1.`

It will thus be seen that there is pro vided a simple and inexpensive flat iron, in which the handle can be readily attached and detached without any diiiiculty, and without danger of burning, and which, when once attached, may be locked positively in its attached position without danger of becoming accidentally disengaged.

Thile I have shown one embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the specific details thereof, but desire to be protected in various changes, alterations and modifications which may come within the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A flat iron, comprising a smooth body portion provided with a longitudinally disposed elongated slot havingoverhangs disposed at the ends thereof; a lock plate having a longitudinally disposed guide slot, said slot having a laterally disposed curved extension; a iiXed lock member mounted on said plate with a portion thereof extending under one of said overhangs; a movable lock member mounted to slide on said plate in said longitudinally disposed slot; and a handle pivoted on said movable lock member and provided with a depending pin eX- tending through said guide slot and the eX tension thereof to permit the movement of and lock the said movable lock member.
