CHESTER L. WRIGHT, CHAR-LES D. WR-IGHT, AND JOHN T. MQCGRMICK, OF SUMNER, MISSOURI.
DETACHABLE SAD-IRON HANDLE.
Application led. February 28, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CHESTER L. lVniGirr, CHARLES D. lWRIGHT, and JOHN T. MCCOR- Mion, citizens of the United States, residing at Sumner, in the county of Chariton and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Sad-Iron Handles; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for an object to provide a detachable handle for a sad iron or the like and reliably eflicient means for securing the handle in operative position.
Another object is to provide a device of the character described which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and easy and convenient to operate.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth in the specification, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section, of our improved handle as applied to a sad iron. Fig. 2 represents a top plan view thereto. Fig. 3 represents a vertical transverse sectional view there` through. Fig. 4 represents a fragmentary perspective view of the top of a flat iron, and F ig. 5 represents a fragmentary perspective view of the underside of the base `plate of the handle.
Referring to the drawing in detail the numeral 6 indicates a flat iron of any prelferred construction having a depression 7 formed at the center of its upper surface directly beneath the opening 8 formed longitudinally in the top plate 9 secured to said iron by suitable countersunk screws 10. The longitudinal walls of the recess 8 are notched as at 11 thus forming an opening in the top plate 9 closely resembling a cross.
The upper surface of the top plate 9 is formed with a pair of parallel guide ribs 12 adapted to form a guide for the base member 13 secured to the handle la preferably curved as indicated in Fig. 1 and suitably secured to the plate 13 by screws 15 countersunk within said base member. The
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
Serial No. 821,726.
base member 13 carries a depending shank 16 having a head 17 enlarged laterally of the shank 16 and adapted to be positioned through the top plate 9 at the recesses 11 in the opening S. The shank 16 is of the same or approximately the same width as the opening 8 and is adapted to be moved longitudinally within said opening so as to engage the head 17 under the top plate 9 and preventremoval of the handle 111. To insure against the base member 13 and handle carried thereby from moving longitudinally relative to the top plate 9, a vertically movable locking member or key 18 is provided and is adapted to be positioned through the notched portion of the opening 3 after the shank 16 and head 17 have been properly moved into locked position beneath the top plate 9.
A suitable operating handle 19 is secured by a screw 20 to the key 18 by means of which the said key may be conveniently manipulated to release or lock the handle as desired.
The medial portion of the base member 13 of the handle is preferably reinforced as by increasing the thickness thereof at this point as clearly shown in Fig. 1. One of the longitudinal edges of said base member is formed with a lateral enlargement 21 having a flat shoulder 22 adapted to engage either one of the shoulders 23 at the ends of the cutaway portions 24 formed in the guide ribs 12 to stop the longitudinal movement of the base member 13 when the head 17 registers with the notched medial portion of the opening 8.
That we claim is A sad iron comprising; a body portion, having a top plate, a longitudinal opening centrally disposed in said top plate, having notched walls to form a transverse opening, said openings having the form of a cross, a plurality of parallel and longitudinal running ribs on said top plate having centrally disposed cutaway portions forming abutting shoulders thereto, a handle having a base plate attached thereto, a depending lug from said base plate having transverse locking lugs thereto, adapted to be inserted through 'the transverse opening of the top plate and moved into a portion of the longitudinal names to this speoiication in the presence of 10 y opening an independent looking key vertwo subscribing witnesses.
tieally inserted in said transverse opening w 1 t0 lool; said handle upon said iron,A and oppositely disposed lugs on the edge of said JOHN T MCORMICK base plate adapted to be seated in said outaway portion and abutting against said W'itnesses:
shoulder. FRANK R. STOVER,
In testimony whereof we have signed our EARL W. HOUSE.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
