JOHN '1. SMITH, 0F QUITMAN, TEXAS.
BRIDLE-BIT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed Augie 11, 1911.- Serial No. 643,601.
I To all whom it may concern:
can be adjusted to fit the mouth of a calf or colt.
- With the above object in view this invention is embodied in the various details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims, the invention being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of the bridle bit embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is -a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a top.
view of same showing the relative parts in position adapted to fit the mouth of a colt or calf. Fig. 1 is a side elevation thereof.
Referring specifically to the drawings, in
which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, the numerals 5 designate suitable cheek plates of steel or other material. Each of the plates 5 is provided with an arcuate slot 7, a T-slot 8 having the base thereof communicating with the intermediate portion of the convex side of the arcuate slot and a second T-slot 10 disposed within the arc of the slot 7 and having the base portion thereof communicating with the intermediate portion of the concaved side of the arcuate slot, the slots 8 and 10 being in alinement. A notch 9 is arranged at each endof the head of the T-slot 8 on the outer edge thereof. These plates 5 are spaced apart and between the same is arranged a curved mouth piece 13 which has the extremities thereof fixed to the said plates in the vicinity of-one end of the arcuate slot. A movable bar 12 has the extremities thereof extending through the plates 5 and the openings formed by the arcuate and T-slots therein allowing the said bar to be moved from one slot to the other and to various positions on the said plates.
In use, the bar 12 can be moved along the arcuate slots 7 to any position desired and can also be shifted into either of the T-slots 8 or 10. Upon being shifted into the former T-slot, the said bar is brought into a position to rest in the undersidev of the lower jaw of the animal and in being engaged in either of the notches 9 is held against movement. Upon the bar 12 being shifted into the T-slots 10 the bar is brought into position whereby the bit is adapted tofit the mouth of a colt, calf, or other small animal. When in the latter position, the bar 12 is useful for the purpose of drenching, examination of the teeth, or for unchoking a colt, calf or the like. f
It will be observed that the bar 12 is curved and being revolub-le within the plates can be adjusted to any desired position. The eyelets, 6 and 11 are for the purpose of the attachment of the lines, as will be understood.
What is claimed as new is g 1. A bridle bit including spaced cheek plates having arcuate slots therein and T- slots disposed within the arcs of the said slots and communicating with the intermediate portion of the concaved side of the arcuate slots, a mouthpiece fixed at its extremities to the said plates in the vicinity of one end of the arcuate slots, and a movable bar mounted between the two plates and adapted to be shifted from one of the said slots to the other.
2. A bridle bit comprising spaced cheek plates, each having an arcuate slot therein Patented Dec. 19, 1911.
and a T-slot communicating with the interarcuate slot and notches in the end of the Intestimony that I claim the foregoing T-slot, a mouth piece fixed at its extremias my own, I have hereto afiixed my signaties to the said plates, and a movable bar ture in the presence of two Witnesses. mounted between the said plates and adapt- JOHN T; SMITH. ed to be shifted from one of the said slots Witnesses: to the other and adapted to engage in the C. C. FERGUSON,
said notches. JAS. D. HARRIS.
