ELIHU ENGLAND, OF MOSSY GREEK, TENNESSEE.
Letters Patent No. 101,243; dated March 29, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT m TANNING- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pan of the lame To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIHU ENGLAND, of the village of Mossy Creek, in the county of Jefferson and State of Tennessee,.have discovered a new and improved Process for the Tanning of Hides; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
My process-is as follows 'lhe hides are prepared in the manner now employed, excepting that it is preferable they should be greenshaved, or skired, to that more uniform thickness which is not usual in the present processes until after the'tanning is accomplished.
The stnifiug is then applied, and the hides are placed in vats (of the usual construction) containing the saturated solution of barks; where they are allowed to remain from six to sixty days, according to the weight and quality of the hides.
To hasten the operation, and at the same time to improve the quality, the hides should be handled at least once in every twenty-four hours.
After the tanning operation is completed, the hides are passed through the usual processes for finishing.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The application of the stulfing to the hides before they are placed in the vats, by which the absorption of the tannin is efi'ected with greater rapidity, and the process of: tanning materially shortened.
Witnesses: ELIHU ENGLAND.
P. M. OHUROHMAN, R. H. ASHMORE.
