Description

illluited fitates pawn Qhjfllitnt LOUIS F. ROBERTSON, OF MOBRISANIA, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 77,099, dated April 21, 1868; reissue N 2,947, dated May 26, 1868; reissue No. 3,864,
' dated March 1, 1870.
DEPROVEITENT IN COMPOUNDS FOR TREATING RIDES AND SKINS.
The Bchedifle etmed to in these Letters Patent and makin'g part of the same.
To all whom i t may concern t Be it known that l,-'LOUIs F. Ronnnrsox, of Morrisania, formerly of \Vcst Farms, in the county of Westchester, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Compound for Treatiug, Hides and Skins; andl do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription thercot', which will enable thoseskilledin-the art to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a compound of lime, earbonate of soda, and fish-oil, or other oil, with or without molasses, for the purpose of treating hides and skins, in such a manner that the operation of removing the hair therefrom, and the subsequent operation of tanning the same, are materially facilitated. I do not confine myself to the precise substances 'mentioned, as known equivalents thereof can be used without departing from the nature of my invention.
The proportions in which 1 mi.\; the ingredicntstogether an: about as follows:
Lime, twelve parts; soda, or other alkali, twelve parts; fish-oil, thrre parts, by'fweight.
When molasses is added to the compound, I take alxmt four parts thereof, and mix itwith the other ingredients.
in. substituting equivalents of either of the above articles, such, tbr instance, as other saccharine substances t'or molasses, or grease instead of oil, or other alkali for soda, iegm'd must be had to the strength or quality of the substitutes, so that the quantity employed nuiy.he increased or diminished in order to of alkali and oil should be increased, and also the proportion of saccharine matter when used in the mixture.
In preparing my compound, I dissolve the lime in sutficient water to slack'it, and add the other ingredients under constant agitation, until the mass is intimately mixed, usinga gentle heat also to expedite the making of the mixture, if the heat evolved by the dissolving of the lime is not deemed suflicient.
The compound thus obtained,,with or without the addition of saccharine substances, can be used with great advantage for softening and 'depilating or unhairing hidesand skins, and it materially shortens the time required for tanning, since by its use the tedious operation of liming the hides and skins is rendered superfluou and furthermore, by its action, the hides and skins are made more susceptible, and predisposed to the speedy and favorable action of the tanning materials. v
The oil produces a saponaocous compound when brought in contact with the alkali, and softens the hide-s and skins, and t':Icilitat-es the removal of the hairs without the deleterious ctl'ects produced by the lime and alkali. in the absence of the oil, upon the gelatinous and fibrous parts of the hides and skins.
By the addition of the molasses or saccharine matter, which readily generates an acid, the deleterious and thereby the unhairing of the'hiles and skins is rapidly actxnuplished without destroying the gelatine, which must be as much as possible saved, in order to manutactulc a good quality ol'leather.
Molasses. or other saccharine substances, diluted with water, is capable of preparing green hides and skins for-the depilating proce s, it the hides and skins are afterward treated with alkalics, without using lime oiyoil.
7 What I claim as new, and desile to secure by Lettels Patent, is-
A compound for treating hides and skins, composed of lime, carbonate of soda, and oil, or their equivalcnts, substantial] y as described.
Also, the combination of the said ingredients with molasses, or other saccharine sulmtances, substantially as and for the purpose described.
Also, dcpilatiug hides and skins by first applying molasses or saci hnriire substances, and alterwanls treatingthem with alkaline substances, substantially as described.
' This specification signed by-me this 15th day of February, 1870.
- L. F. ROBERTSON.
