COUPLING" DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
la a-9.111%. 19, 1911.
Application filed November 21, 1910. Serial No. 593,469.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that 1, JOHN PRIMM Panen'r'r, a citizen of the Unlted States, and a resident of Corbin, in thecounty of WVhitwhich will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in whichy Figure 1 represents a perspective of the abutting ends of two cars, in which the side of one car is broken away, showing my chain in position. Fig. 2 is an'elevatio'n of the chain in part perspective. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the chain and draw-bar, showing the chain in position.
My invention consists in substituting for one link of acoupling chain E the element C, which is provided with an opening, preferably lengthwise the chain, adapted to support. closely the coupling pin B.
Asshown in Fig. 3 the draw-bar Amay be provided with a recess for admitting the element C and stopping it in exact position to receive the coupling pin B. The chain 1s preferably provided with the usual hook I) adapted either to penetrate a link or to hold a link laterally. To connect the drawbar A to another car the chain E is thrown around the post F and hooked. \Vith the element C constructed as it is, the chain can be used as an ordinary chain for any purpose without limitation, the pin of the drawbar is more strongly supported and less liable to bend, brealg'or jar loose, and a doubled chain connection is provided between the pin and the other car very simply and effectively.
I do not limit myself to the exact form in which my invention is herein disclosed.
any further than is indicated in the claims.
I claim:
1. A free chain coupling, comprising a series of flexibly connected elements; one of said elements being a hook; another being in the form of a sleeve provided with fin-shaped means having perforations adapted to receive the adjoining elements (If the chain coupling.
2. A free chain coupling, comprising a series of flexibly connected elements; one. of said elements being a hook; another being in the form ofa sleeve provided with a fin perforted to receive the adjoining elements of the chain coupling.
' JOHN PRIMM PADGETT.
