SASH LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED 11.24, 1911.

JOHN A. OIBENCHAIN, OF THOMAS, ALABAMA.
SASI-I-LOCK.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JOHN A. OBENCIIAIN, of Thomas, Jefferson county, Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification.
The present invention relates to sash. locks, and has for its object to provide a simple and economical lock of the character described, which can be readily applied to the ordinary window and which will effectively and simultaneously lock or secure the sashes relatively one to the other and to the window frame, either when said sashes are in their closed or in any desired open position.
The invention will be better understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, where1n- Figure 1 is a perspective View, partly in section, showing the improved locking device in position; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the window frame and the upper sash, illustrating the improved looking device applied to each side of the window; and Fig. 3 is a view of the locking device inverted.
Referring to the drawings, 4 indicates the window frame, to which strips 5, 6 and 7 are secured. The lower sash 8 slides between strips 5 and 6 and the upper sash 9 slides between strips 6 and 7. A support or casing 10, here shown as mounted on one end of the lower sash 8, is secured thereto in any suitable manner, as by screws 11 passing through openings in the casing or support. This support or easing carries the locking members 12 and 13 which are here shown as passing through the walls thereof. Those looking members are preferably arranged at right angles to each other, as illustrated, to the end that one will engage the upper sash 9 and the other the window frame 4:. Any suitable means may be provided for engaging the locking members 12 and 13, but it is preferred to apply in the window frame and the upper sash a series of perforations 14, the edges of which may, if desired, be protected by a suitable metallic element, as plate 15. Suitable connections are provided between the said locking members so that movement imparted to one will be transmitted to the other. As here shown, a rod 16 is provided, one end of which is Specification of Letters Patent.

connected to locking member 12 and the other end to locking member 13. It will be seen that this rod insures that the two locking members will have the same movement imparted thereto simultaneously. The looking members are preferably held normally in their extended or locked position and to this end there is provided a suitable spring 17 one end of which is secured to one of the locking members, here shown as 13, the other end being anchored to the support or casing 10. If desired, the casing 10 may be cut-out or recessed at 18 and 19 so that said support or casing 10 may be mounted on the lower sash in closer proximity to the window; frame and the ;upper sash, the :ecess l8 accommodating strip 6 and the recess 19 and the sash cord 20.
It will be understood that to change the relative positions of the sashes, it is only necessary to pull on one end of either of the locking members 12 and 13 to withdraw both members from engagement with the window frame and the upper sash. lVhen, thereafter, the sashes have been moved to their closed, or any desired open position, the locking member is released and, under the influence of spring 17, said members promptly enter the desired recesses 14 in the window frame and the upper sash, thereby securely locking the sashes in the desired position.
WVhile, if desired, one of the improved locking devices may be provided on each end of the lower sash, this is not necessary as it has been found that one of these devices, mounted on one end of the lower sash, effectively secures the upper and lower sashes with relation one to the other and to the window frame.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that the improved device provides a simple and economical lock which may be readily applied, which effectively locks the sashes with relation one to the other and to the window frame, by the provision of the two locking members, and which, by reason of the connection between said locking members, is readily operated.
lVhat I claim is 1. In a look, a casing, two locking members mounted therein and movable at an angle to each other, and a connecting element loosely connected at its end portions other locking member whereby movement imparted to one looking member is transmitted to the other.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN A. OBENCHAIN.
