Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 19, 1911.
Divided and this application filed July 31, 1911.
Serial .No. 641,575.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jossr DUivAi, a subject of the King of Hungary, residingr at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following .is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention is a division of my pending application of improvements in locks, tiled May 5th, 1911, Serial No. 625,151, and together with a companion application tiled under even date, represents a series of improvements .in that type of lock commonly styleda padlock.
The object of the present invention is to furnish a lock body with a shutter for closing the keyhole of the lock. The shutter has a mechanism adapted to be actuated by the key of the lock, and the mechanism is concealed, particularly the actuating mechanism, whereby it will be almost impossible for a person to open the lock unless familiar with the same.
l attain the above object by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically descrbed and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lock in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional Vview of two plates forming part of the lock, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a detached middle plate, Fig. l is a perspective view of a detached outer plate, Fig'. 5 is a front elevation of the middle plate showing the mechanism carried thereby invan unlocked position, Fig. 6 a vertical sectional view of the plates of the lock, showing the shutter in a closed position, Fig. 7 is a similar view showing the shutter in an open position, Fig. 8 is a front elevation of the middle plate showing the mechanism thereof in a locked position, Fig. S) is a rear elevation of the inner plate, Fig. 10 is a perspective view of a detached member, Fig. 11 is a perspective view of a detached shutter, Fig. 12 is a perspective view of an actuating pin, and Fig. 13 is an elevation of a key partly broken away and partly in section.
The reference numeral 50 denotes a lock body and connected to the front side of this body are three plates, the outer plate being designated 1, t-he middle plate 2 and the inner plate The plates 1, 2 and 3 have scalloped edges, and the edges of the plates 2 and 3 are knurled. The plate 1 is provided with a vertical oblong opening 4: and adapted to tit in said opening is a shutter 5. The rear side of the shutter 5, at one end thereof, has a shank provided with a circular head 7. Thisl head is adapted to bear against the inner side of a spring pressed member 8 slidably mounted in an opening 9 provided therefor in the plate 2.
The member 8 has a small opening 10 providing clearance for the shank (3 and a large opening 11 adapted to provide clearance for the head 7. The shank G is normally retained in the opening 10 by a V-shaped flat spring 12 engaging that end of the member 8 containing the small opening 10, the spring 12 being located in one end of the opening 9 of the plate 2 and having one end thereof mounted in a recess 13 provided therefor in the upper wall of the opening 9.
To shift the member 8 whereby the head 7 can pass into the opening 11 of the member 8, a tapering actuating pin 14 is movably mounted in a slot 15 provided therefor in the plate 2, the outer end of the pin being knurled to correspond with the knurled edge of said plate. Mounted in the pin 14 is one end 1G of a spring 17, said spring being arranged in a slot 18 provided therefor in the plate 2. r1`he spring 17 is mounted over a pin 19, carried by the plate 1, and the inner end of said spring is retained in the lower end of the slot 18. This spring normally retains the pin 141 seated in the slot 15, but by pressing one of the bits 15a of a key 15 against the outer end of the pin 14, said pin can be shifted inwardly to move the member 8, whereby the head 7 of the shutter can recede into the opening 11.
The `head 7 is normally retained in engagement with the member 8 by a flat spring 20 mounted in a slot 21 provided therefor in the plate 3, said spring protruding from an opening 22 in communication with the slot 21. The spring bears against the head 7, whereby, upon the member 8 being shifted, the head 7 will be immediately forced into the opening 11, the shank 6 into the vertical oblong opening 4t and the shutter 5 out of said opening. The shutter can then be swung to one side. The lower end of the shutter 5 is adapted to close key openings 23 andy 24 in the'plates 3 and 2 respectively.
To retain the plates 1,12- and 3 together, said plates are adapted to be connected by screws passing through openings 25 provided therefor in the plates 2 and 3, the screws extending into the plate l without having Zthe ends thereof exposed on the front side of the plate.
After the shutter has been opened by pressing the key against the outer end of the pin'lt, the key 15 can be inserted in the openings 23 and 24 to act-nate the locking `mechanism within the lock body 50.
lVhat I claim is 1.A In a key operated lock, a lock body, plates'connected to said body and having k'eyholes formed therein, a shutter for closing'said keyholes and provided with a shank having an enlarged head, a spring controlled member engaging said shank for normally maintaining said shutter in position to close that keyhole with which the shutter associates, a spring pressed pin capable of being shifted to move said member in one direction thereby permitting of the release of'sai'd shutter, and a spring for normally maintaining said head in engagement with said member.
2. In a key operated lock, a lock body, plates connected thereto and provided with keyholes, a shutter for normally closing said -keyholes and providedwth a shank having an enlarged head, a slotted member mounted upon said shank and normally holding said shutter in a closed position, said shutter having a portion of its slot enlarged for `the passage of said head, means tor vmaintaining said member in position to be engaged by said head whereby the shutter will be maintained in closed position, means for shifting said member thereby releasing said shutter, and means for maintaining said head in engagement with said member.
In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
