To all whom it may concern:

e it known that I, LOREN R. WITHERELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Currycombs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to curry combs and it is designed to construct a device of this nature from sheet metal in such a manner that during the use thereof, the dirt on the animals body is removed.

Heretofore, in the construction of curry combs, it has been the custom to construct the same with a solid back, in such a manner that the dirt removed from one part of the animals body settles on another part, consequently causing the cleaning operation thereof to be indefinite and in no way thorough.

It is the object of the present invention to eliminate this, so that the dirt when removed, will circulate in the atmosphere, or be retained in the body of the brush, but will not return to another locality of the animals body.

With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, explained and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal section taken.

The curry comb forming the subject matter of the 'present invention, comprises a late of sheet metal, having a series of openings punched therein, so that the flanges formed by said opening extend in a common direction. The two oppositely disposed edges of said plate are bent u wardly, while the main body portion thereo is convex, said curving extending through the upwardly bent portion. It will be noted that the openings may be made with any shape punch as for example 11a and 12b, so that the number of flanges may be increased or decreased as desired, but it has been found by experiment, that the flanges formed by a triangular punch, produce the best results. A perforation formed by a punch of this nature has three flanges surrounding the same,

which are of sullicient size to insure the positive removal of the dirt.

0n each longitudinal side of plate 10 is a projection or stud 12, to which is secured a grip plate 13. This grip plate comprises a sheet of rectangular metal having the terminals thereof bent downwardly and the right angles to the body thereof, forming the arms 14. In order to secure a hand band or retain a member to the body of the comb, the arms 14 rest on the interior of the projections 12 and engage the terminals of the web 15, which are interposed between said projections and said arms.

It will be noticed that the plate 10 is curved outwardl from the grip plate 13, in such a manner t at in the use of the comb, any part or locality of the animals body may be thoroughly operated thereon; while the transverse ends of the plate l() are curved outwardly, and have a small flange 16, extending upwardly therefrom. This construction greatly facilitates the cleaning of the animal and eliminates the scraping of the animals skin, and pulling of hair, therefrom, which has been found to be objectionable features to the old style curry comb.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is new and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent is:

1. In a curry comb, the combination with a comb plate, of vertical flanges formed on each side of said comb plate, a grip plate interposed between said vertical flanges, de-

r.pendent arms formed at the terminals of said grip plate, a flexible web superposed above said grip plate, having its terminals disposed between said vertical flanges and dependent arms, and securing means piercing the vertical flanges, dependent arms, and web aforesaid.

2. In a curry comb, the combination With a oonoavo-oonvex comb plate, of flanges eX- ltending completely around said plate, enlarged vertical flanges formed on the longitudinal sides of the comb plate, a grip plate interposed between said flanges, dependent arms formed at the terminals of said grip plate and resting parallel with said enlarged flanges, a exible web superposed above said grip plate, having its terminals interposed between said dependent arms and said enlarged flanges, and rivets passing through said enlarged flanges, Web and dependent arms.
