Be it known that I, BERTRAM MAHN, a

citizen of the -United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in smoking pipes, the object of the invention being to provide an improved construction of pipe, in combination with 'an improved arrangement of tubular coil, which compels a long passage of the smoke before it reaches the smoker without lengthening the ordinary pipe, thus giving the smoker a. cool smoke with the ordinary length of pipe.

.A further object is to provide an improved coil, and improved means for connecting the coil with the pipe, whereby the smoke is compelled to take a lon path from I the bowl to the-mouth piece, an which construction enables the removal of the coil,

In the bottom of bowl 1, a pocket 5 is formed, and communicates with the main portion of the bowl by means of a restricted opening 6. The lower end ofthls Pocket 5 is screw-threaded as shown at 7, for the reception of a sectional tubular thumb screw 8, and said pocket 5 is adapted to contain absorbent cotton 9, or other suitable material to withhold the nicotin in the smoke.

The respective ends of this coil" 14, x are provided with annular flanges 15 against which the endsof the tubula'r screws 10, bear, and when said screws are screwed into their respective openings, they will securely hold the coil in place. The ends of the coil, of course, must be suit ably shaped as shown to allow a movement thereof in positioning the screws in pocket 5, and stem 2 respectively, and to also enable the removal of the screws so that the coil may be detached, cleaned and replaced, or a new coil substituted. By reason of this coil 14, the smoke from ,the bowl 1 will take a long cool trip through the coil, before it reaches the smoker, thus giving him a cool smoke with a relatively short pipe.

The absorbent cotton .9 in pocket 5 prevents the greater portion of nicotin from entering the coil-14, but in the course of events, it is probable this coil should be cleaned and replaced, and the coil may be readily removed by removing the sectionalthumb screws 8 and 10.

Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentjs:

1. A. smoking pipe comprising a bowl, an integral stem thereon, and a mouth piece screwed into the stem, said bowl having a screw-threaded pocket in its base, said stem having. a screw-threaded opening therein adjacent the 'mouth piece, said opening communicating with a duct'through the mouth piece, a 0011, and sectional externally screwthreaded tubular thumb screws positioned around said coil and screwed into the pocket and opening respectively, substantially as described. integral stem thereon, and a mouth piece screwed into the stem, said bowl having a. screw-threaded pocket in its base, said ste n having a screw-threaded o ening therein adjacent the mouth piece, sai o ning communicating with a duct throng the mouth piece, a coil, sectional externally screwthreaded tubular thumb screws positioned around said coil and screwed into the pocket and opening respectively, said coil having annular flanges at its ends positioned a inst the ends of said thumb screws, susta tially as described.

3. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl, an integral stem thereon, and a mouth piece screwed into the stem, said bowl having a screw-threaded pocket in its base, said stein having a screw-threaded opening therein adjacent the mouth piece, said opening communicating with a duct through the mouth piece, a coil, sectional externally screwthreaded tubular thumb screws positioned around said coil and screwed into the pocket and opening respectively, said coil positioned about said stem, and said pocket adapted to receive 'nicotin retaining material, substantially as described. 4. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl, an integral stem thereon, and a mouth piece screwed into the stem, said bowl having a screw-threaded pocket in its base, said stem having a screw-threaded opening therein adjacent the mouth iece, said opening communicating with a not through the mouth piece, a coil, sectional externally screwt-hreaded tubular thumb screws positioned around said coil and screwed into the pocket and opening respectively, saidcoil having.
