Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE B. KErovnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Uniontown, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Scaffolding, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in fastening together sections of knockdown scaffolding and which is more particularly adapted to be supported on an adjustable bracket shown and described in my co-pending application, Serial No. 581,390, filed Sept. 10, 1910.

The object of my invention is to construct a scaffolding which will consist of strong, durable, and light sections which can be readily assembled in any lengths and securely held in position, while at the same time, the sections may be easily separated and transported Without injury.

My invention consists of features of construction and relative arrangements of the several parts which will be hereinafter more fully and clearly described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which the several parts are indicated by the same reference characters in the several figures: Figure 1, is a bottom plan view of one end of a scaffolding section; Fig. 2, is a similar view of the opposite end of a section; Fig. 3, is a top view of the ends, after the sections are locked together. Fig. 4, is a section on line IVIV of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a side view of Fig. 2, after retaining clamps are put in place.

Referring to the drawings in whichI have shown my preferred form, said scaflolding lengths or sections, 23, 23, are from eight to ten feet long, and are preferably made of metal frames 24, 24, one side of which is only provided with a covering of thin sheet iron. One end of each of these sections 23, 23, is bifurcated, or having two tongues, as shown at 25, while at the other end is constructed a socket 26. These two ends are proportioned so that tongues 25 will readily ends, and secured to the end sections or to each other by bolts 29, passing through properly spaced and registering holes in the platform sections 23, 23, and sections of the clamps 27 and 28, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. For a further securing of the ends 25 and 26 together, and to prevent the sections from slipping apart at their ends, I have provided an additional holding clamp. which consists of a double U-shaped flat bar 30, which is secured to the socket end 26, by means of bolts 31. The outer walls of the tongue end 25, are provided wit-h notches32, and similar notches 33, are cut in the inner walls of the socket end 26, said notches registering and being in alinement with each other when the ends 25 and 26 are to be locked together.

34, is a locking plate which is pressed outwardly and away from the notches 32, and 33, by means of coil springs 35, surrounding the bolt-s 31. The locking plate 34 is engaged by a bolt 36, and by turning the winged nut 37, the said plate 34, can be made to engage or disengage the notches 32, and 33, and so look or unlock the ends 25 and 26, against longitudinal movement.

When it is desired to disconnect the sections, all that is necessary is to turn the winged nut 37 the engaging plate 34 passes out of the notches 32, and 33, and permits the ends and sections to be slipped apart.

It will be readily seen from the herein disclosed construction, that applicant has devised a compact, light, and strong form of scaffolding sections, which are provided at their ends with cooperating features of construction which can be securely held to gether in any lengths.

What I claim is 1. A knockdown scafiolding comprising separable flat sections, each section having at one end a tongue and at its other end a U-shaped socket adapted to snugly receive a tongue and clamp members on opposite sides of the said sections, one of said clamp members engaging a seat in said tongue and socket ends and arranged transversely thereof to prevent disengaging of the sections.

2. A knockdown scaffolding comprising separable sections, each section having atone end a tongue and at its other end a socket adapted to snugly receive a tongue, registering recesses, or notches in said tongue and socket ends, and a clamp adapt ed to be seated in said recesses and lock the ends of the sections together.

A knockdown scaffolding comprising separable and dished sections, each section having at one end tongues and at its other end a socket adapted to snugly receive said tongues, registering recesses or notches in said tongues and socket ends, and a clamp GEORGE B.
