HEATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1911.
, Application flied February 11, 1811. Serial No. 608,048.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRIET L; GAL- BRAITH, citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the Dist-riot of Co lumbia, have invented certain new and usein the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to heating devices which are adapted to be used in connection with the heating means, such as steam radiators for houses, apartments and hospitals for purposes of cooking, or for heating water, sterilizing or analogous uses, and consists of certain new and useful improvements in the same, whereby the heater may be removabl connected with the radiator, vwhen desire and which durin the heated period of the year, may be iisconnected therefrom, and used with a steam suppl ing vessel, in which the water is heate by means of a gas or other form of heater.
One of the objects of my invention is to rovide a simple and inexpensive means or conducting the heating medium, such as steam, from the radiator to the heater, in such a manner that the 3, air or steam which issues from the relief valve of the radiator, will be prevented from passing through the heater, but will be allowed to escape into the atmosphere, in the usual manner, thus obviating a very serious objection which exists in devices of this character, heretofore constructed, and in which the escaping gas, air or steam from the radiator asses throu h the heater.
Another 0 ject which have in view, is
to make it possible to use such a heater, in
connection with the usual form of radiator, without altering the latter and without interfering in any manner with its normal operation.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I have illustrated it in the accompanying drawing, which is a side elevation of a radiator and heater, in the form of a cooker, provided with my improved connecting means, and I have described the same with reference thereto in the following specification and claims.
A of the drawing re resents a radiator, of usual construction an B a cooker, adapted in my preferred form to rest upon the radiator. I prefer to place the cooker as shown for the reason that by doing this heat from the radiator will be communicated to the cooker and will many times serve to keep articles of food at the temperature desired without the admission of steam to the interior of the cooker.
a is a relief valve of any ordinary construction, with which a radiator is provided, and is for the purpose of allowing the es cage of gas or air from the radiator.
he connecting means between the radiator and the cooker, through which steam is admitted to the cooker, comprise the T coupling D, which is adapted to be removabiy connected at one end to the steam radiatorand at the other end with the relief valve a, and other elements, as follows: Intermediate the ends of the coupling D there is secured thereto a pipe E connected to another pipe 0 by means of a joint 0 The outer end of the pipe 0 is tapered, and is adapted to enter an opening b 1n the side of the heater or cooker. The pipe 0 is rovided with an ordinary valve, operate by a handle 0'.
The manner of applying and using my invention is obvious In my preferred form a of construction, I locate the su plemental cooker on top of the radiator. 'l lie valve a is then removed from the radiator and the part D secured in place. The valve (1 is then placed upon the part D and the other parts of the connecting means assembled and secured to the part in the usual manncr. The end of the pipe 0 is then inserted in the sup lemental heater or cooker, after which the lleating medium may be admitted to the supplemental heater, the supply being contro led by the valve in the pipe 0. By this construction it will be noted that the action of the relief valve a in connection with the radiator is not interfered with, and the action of the radiator is exactly the same as though the heater was not connected therewith.
It is obvious that the connecting tubes may be made of various lengths, so as to be used with difi'erent forms and sizes of radiators.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A cooker for use with a steam radiator having an outlet passage provided with a relief valve for the escape of air or gas, the said cooker comprising a main body or casing for balding articles to be ham/3d or evoked, and pipe connecfionr for c-onveying steam from, The radiator to the canker said connecticms wiiiaining a, valve in neantrei the passage (3f steam therethrough, and adapted to be cnnnected with the outlet passage to file reiivf valveto permit the opgration of he I'iFiiEf valve and cooker inde pendnfly of emh other.
2. A cooker for use in connection with :1 steam radiator comprising a main body or casing for holding articles to be heated or cooked, and a connection for supplying said using with steam said cunnectiun being adapted U) be mnnected with the Yfldifltul hvtween the Pew-ape of relief valve and the i mdiaiur, said vmmeciion being prm'ided with a i'al've u! (001; to control the admihsiun of steam to the saifi asing.
