Letters Patent No. 101,146, dated March 22, 1870.
IMPROVED MEAT-SAFE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and .making peut of the same To all whom 1t may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. MICHAEL, .of Farmersville, in the county of Montgomery, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safes for Preserving Meat, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1, ofthe drawings, is an interior perspective view of the principal apartment of 'my improved safe.
Figure 2 represents an end elevation of the safe with the adjustable Aside apartment.
Figure 3 represents a vertical transverse section' of the side apartment with itsI door and hinged table.
My improved safe is intended for the use of housekeepers who keep a store of meat for family use.
The principal apartment is provided with double doers upon both sides, and the interior of this apart'. ment is furnished with twelve cranes and two or more beams, provided with hooks, upon which meat may be hung. The cranes are so arranged that when the doors are opened they may be swung out for convenient access. The safe is provided, also, with yopenings covered with iinely-perfbrated covers of tin or other metal.
In the drawings- A denotes the principal apartment, having doors, B, and cranes, O.
'.lhe beams, D, are placed centrally in the apart ment between the pairs of cranes.
At oneend of the apartment or body of the safe A, suitable beveled cleats, E, are secured, and the side apartment H is held in contact with the principal apartment by means of the angular projecting cor-- ners t i at the top and bottom of the apartment or side safe H. The side-safe H can be adjusted upon its supports E or removed therefrom as occasion may require.
he hooks in the cross-bars I will .be used for hanging such pieces of meat as have been removed from the safe A for immediate use.
-The table J lis hinged at the bottom of the doorway, so that it may be readily turned upward and out of .the way when thc door K is shut. The object ofthe small table J' is for convenient use in cutting and preparing meat for use, and when the table is turned upward, the trimmings and refuse of the meat will be dropped therefrom into a receptacle, L, provided with a sliding door, M, through which the refuse which may have accumulated may be removed.
The side apartment H may be adjusted laterally, so as to allow ventilating-apertures N to communicate with its interior, which will also permit a circuit of air to pass through vents O and N to and from the principal safe A.
When itis desired to keep fresh provisions in the safe A, a receptacle for ice may be hung upon the uppermost hook a of the safe H, and the latter will be adjusted centrally upon cleats E, to admit the current of air to pass in contact with the ice, from the vents O, thence through the vents N into the large apart-ment A.
The vent beneath the cap P maybe closed or remain open, according to the requirements of the safe, as in case smoked or dried meats'are beiugkept within the safe A, the ventilation above the body of meats is desirable.
A suitable number of vent-s or openings, covered with perforated metal sheets, may be used at the ends of the safe, as represented in figs. 1 and 2, of the drawings.
The body of the structure may be made of wood, of rectangular form, and provided with suitble legs, doors, astenings, and other usual appendages.
Having fully described my improvement in meatsa es,
W hat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat,- ent as my invention, is
,'lhe adjustable side-safe H, provided with its bars I, hinged table J, and receptacle Il, iu combinationv with the safe A, provided with its cranes C, constructed, arranged, and ventilated in the manner and for the purpose described.
In testimonyT whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of September, 1869.
GEORG-E L. MICHAEL. Witnesses z H. 1). K. Pneu, A. L. Inoir.
