n LEWIS W. ,SHAEFFEIL OF UNION TOWNSHIP, OHIO.
Letters .Patent No. 94,138, dated August 24, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN' SMOKE-HOUSE. l
The Schedule referred to in these'Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS W. SHAEFFER, of Union township, in the vcounty of Miami, in the State of Ohio, h.ve invented a new and improved Smoke- House and MeatSafe; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of 4my invention consists in constructing a portable house, provided with a perforated partitionplate, furnace, and fire-box, and with Ventilating openings, allconstructed and arranged as hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its'construction and operation.
Figure l represents a perspective view of the bouse, with a portion cut away to exhibit the interior. i
, The houseis mounted on four feet, and is circular horizontally; but the form of a quadrangle, or that of an Octagon, will do quite as welll A represents a part ofthe frame; and
C, the uprigbts.
Near the lower partof the frame a tight bottom is put in.
A partition, N, of sheet-iron, having perforations near its outer edge, is fastened to the circular part of the frame F. This plate, withv its lieiforations, serves the double purpose, that of protecting the meat from the heat of' the furnace, and of distributing the smoke and air.- y
K is a furnace, closing tightly ou the outside of the house, and is slid out audio, as is desired.
At m (see dotted lines) is shown the lire-box, which is elevated, to prevent burning of the wooden bot-tom or floor beneath.
On opposite sides of thc house, areopenings, H and I, for ventilation.
These openings are covered on the inside with tine wire-cloth, which will let the yair pass freely and exclude insects.
A sheet-iron perforated plate is attached at the top, the position of which is shown by red dotted lines.
` The slide G closes the openings on the side.
The upper compartment has a door, L, openinginto it, and in the centre of which is an upright, D, having arms, O O,.and cross-pieces, to'which suitable hooks are attached, to suspend the meat.
This upright is supported by the cross-pieces of the frame F and E, and turns freely about its axis.
In the roof of the house is au opening, to which a pipe is attached, which is closed by a wire-.cloth cap, M
When used for smoking, the fuel is put into the fire-box m of the furnace, the furnace being closed tightly, and also the openings on theside, by the slide G. The top, at M, is likewise closed.`
When the meat is sutiiciently smoked,-and it is desired touse the house as a meat-safe, the furnaceK is carefully closed, the slide G is withdrawn from over the openings, and the cap M is placed over the pipe at the top.v Thus arranged, :the air can pass through the lower openings H and I, and escape through the cap M, thus excluding insects, and preventing the presence of foul air inside.
Figure 2 isa horizontal section ofthe house, abovethe perforated plate N, showing that plate, and, in`
dotted lines, the position of the furnace or drawer K,
and the fire-box M, beneath it.
Figure 3 is a vertical section through the middle of: the drawer and fire-box, showing the elevated or suspended position of the box m.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure b v Let-ters Patent, is-
1. The combination and arrangement of the drawer or furnace K, the suspended tire-box fm, and the perforated metallic plate N, substantially as described.
2. The arrangement of the ventilators H and I, and cap M, in relation to the two compartments fomned by the plate N, substantially as herein set forth.
