vide a can opener of the above kind, the
' gripping mechanism of which is formed of one continuous strip of resilient metal.
WVhile my can opener may be fitted to different sized cans, where the difierences are not to a large degree, yet it may be made in different sizes where the differences in the sizes of the cans are considerable.
With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as are described in this specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof and particularly pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
Reference being had to the drawing: Figure l is a perspective view of my invention, the can to which it has been applied being indicated by the dotted lines. Fig. 2.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, in which like numerals designate like parts throughout, my invention, in detail, is described as follows:
The can opener comprises a strip of resilient metal 1 which is continuous from one end 2 to the other end 3 thereof. The strip is first formed into a suitable handle or brace 4, which is designed to press against the palm of the hand while the can is being held. This handle or brace consists in a layer of metal 5 which has folded back upon itself a second layer 6, said end 2 of the layer 5 being securely riveted by means of a rivet 6 to the circular or curved part 7 of the can opener, which circular part encircles the top of a can to be opened, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The handle 8 is formed integral with the curved or circular part 7 of the opener, the same as the layer of metal 6 is formed integral with the other end of said curved part. The handle 8 is designed to accommodate the fingers of the hand, the curved end 9 thereof being adapted to partially encircle the little finger of the hand, thereby enabling the user to obtain a firm grip upon the can.
Riveted near each end of the circular part 7 of the opener by means of rivets 10. or other suitable means adapted for the purpose, are supports 11 provided with the right angular portions 12 through which portions and the respective ends of said curved part 7, said rivets orfastening means 10 extend. Said supports meet at their inner ends and have passing through registering perforations therein a rivet 13 or its equivalent, upon which rivet the arm 14 rotates. Said arm 14 is provided with a perforation at its inner end which receives said rivet 13, said arm being interposed between the ends of the supports 11. Said arm is curved near its outer end at 15 adapting the right hand to firmly grip the same. Provided upon said arm is a suitable knife 16 which-is held in place by suitable securing means 17 such as a rivet or nut and bolt connections.
In Fig. 2 I have employed a slightly modified form of cutting blade, which form. is adjustable in that said cutting blade may be slid longitudinally in a longitudinal perforation 18 of the arm 14. When the cutting blade is at the desired position a thumb screw 19 is screwed downward upon the threaded lug 20 until it binds against the upper face of said arm 14, securing the cutting blade temporarily in position against longitudinal movement.
Although I have specifically described the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts of my invention, yet I do not confine myself to such specific combination, construction and arrangement of parts but reserve and may exercise the right to make such changes therein as do not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
