Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed October 26, 1910.

To all whom it may concern: *Be it known that I, CHARLES citizen of the United States, residing at I Lafollette, in the county of Campbell and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Electric Door-Bells and Fire-Alarms, of
. which the following is a specification.
My .invention consists in the improved construction of a combined electric door bell and fire alarm.
The objects of my invention are to combine with an ordinary electric house bell, means for ringing the bell automatically through the action of heat; to so construct my improved alarm and door bell as to admit of the same being produced at a comparatively low cost of manufacture and toprovide means for adjusting the heat controlled diaphragm for operation by different temperatures1, These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- .Figure 1 is a face view of my improved device, showing a diagrammatic illustration of the wiring outside of the bell ringing de- Vice, and Fig. 2 isa sectional view on two PlanEs asindicated by line w-won Fig. 1.

K In carrying out my invention, I employ an ordinary electric bell ringing apparatus, which comprises a metallic back plate 1, magnet coils 2 and 3,a spring supported armature plate 4 having an upwardly extending bell tapper arm 4 supported in desirable proximity to'z bell 5, the usual vibrating tongue 6 supportedfrom the armature, an adjustable contact screw 7, a contact screw supporting bracket 8, and removable cap or cover plate 9. Thebell ringing apparatus is wired in the usual manner, this wiring consisting in a wire 10 which leads from one contact point of an ordinary push button 11 to a binding post 12, which is supported from the base of the plate 1, this post comprising an external cap 12 and a screw 13, the latter passing through an opening in the plate 1 and being insulated therefrom. The coils 2 and 3 are connected together and one of said coils is connected with a binding post or screw 18 through a wire 18*,
said screw passing through and being insulated from the plate 1 and being connected with the contact screw supportingbracket 8. The other coil is connected to the binding post 17. A wire 19 connects the remaining point of the push button 11 with a screw 20 which projects from and is in contact with the plate 1, Afiixed to the outer face of the mechanism casing 9, is a bracket or frame 21 which has the form of two crossed yoke pieces. This contact pin has its outer end normally adjacent to the inner face of the diaphragm 24, while the inner end of said in is connected through the medium of a w1re 27 with the outer end of the binding post screw 13.
In utilizing my device, it is obvious that the button 11 may be at the outer side of an entrance door of a house, while the bell and its ringing apparatus, may be supported at any suitable. point within the house. It will also be understood that the ringing of the bell through the vibratory movement of the tapper arm 4*, will be produced in the usual manner, by pressing the button 11 and establishing the necessary electric circuit through the battery. In case, however, the
temperature of the atmosphere in a room where the bell is located, should be unduly raised through the presence of fire, it will be understood that the diaphragm 24 will expand sufficiently to produce a contact between the diaphragm and the outer end of the contact pin 26, which through the connections heretofore described and the connection between the supporting frame of the diaphragm, thecasing 9 and the plate 1, will serve to'establish a circuit through the battery and magnet coils, which will result in the automatic ringing of the bell thus indicating the presence of fire or undue heat.
From the construction described, it will readily be understood that I have combined with an ordinary manually operated electric bell ringing mechanism, simple and effective means for causing the bell to ring in case of fire or excessive heat in the room where the bell'is located From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and 'elficient means are herein provided for accomplishing the obj ects of the invention, but While the elements shown and described are Well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes Within its purview such changes as may be made Within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim, is
In combination with an electric bell having a battery in circuit therewith, a push button closing said circuit and a coil casing for said bell, a thermostatic circuit closer removably mounted on said casing comprising a contact adapted to extend through said casing, a thermostatic diaphragm expansible into position to close the circuit through said contact, a yoke frame for said diaphragm and removably secured to said casing, and electric connect-ions between said diaphragm and the bell ringing mechanism and said contact pin whereby the contact of the diaphragm with said pin results in closing a circuit through the battery and the coils of the bell ringing mechanism, and means for adjusting the heat controlled diaphragm for operation at difierent temperatures.
