To all whom it may concern.
Be itknown that we, OSMAN K. NESTOR and EMIL Moon, citizens of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire- Alarm-Operating Devices. of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fire-alarm-operating devices; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is designed for use in connection with the ordinary electric Wiring of a hotel or other building, a further object being to provide a device of the class specified which is designed for use in any room of a hotel or other building, so as to notify the occupant of such room of a fire originating therein and also notify the clerk or other party in charge of the office.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view showing the method of applying and using our improved alarm-operating device; Fig. 2, a sectional end view of said device, and Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 and showing a modification.
1n the practice of our invention we provide a device a of the class specified, which comprises two similar plates a and a composed of any suitable metal or other material adapted to serve as an electrical conductor, and these plates are connected by screws (0, and the screws a are insulated from the plate (0 as shown at a The plate a is freely movable on the screws (0*, but is held in a fixed position and at a predetermined distance from the plate a by a spring 6, which is placed between said plates and forces the plate (0 outwardly against the heads of the screws (0*. In Fig. 1 of the drawings we have shown diagrammaticallya battery 0, with which is connected wires (3 and 0 which also connect with a signal-bell or similar device 6*, supposed to be in the oflice of a hotel or similar building, and the wires 0 and e are provided with supplemental wires 6 which connect with an ordinary annunciator fin the usual or anydesired manner. Oneof our improved fire-alarm-operating devices is placed in each room of the building and in acircuitof which one of the wires forms a part, and an ordinary push-button g is also placed in said room, together with a signal-bell or similar device 7L, and the push-button g is connected with the wire a by supplemental wires g, and the bell or signal device 71 is connected with both of the wires 6 and a" by supplemental wires 7L The insulating and fusible material 0 is designed to melt or fuse at a predetermined temperature, and in practice one part of the wire a is connected with the plate a and the other with the plate a and when the material 0 is fused the spring 6 will come in contact with the plate a and will complete the circuit through our improved fire-alarm-operating device, and the signal devices a and 72/ will both be operated, as will also the annunciator f. The operation of the signal device 72. will alarm the occupant of the room, if he be asleep, and the operation of the annunciator f will notify the clerk or other party in charge of the office that a fire is in a room connected with said annunciator, the manner of connecting the same not being shown, as it forms no novel feature of this invention, and it will therefore be seen that our invention does not interfere in any way with the wiring at present employed, but may be placed therein at any suitable point, and when in position, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the pushbutton 9 may be operated at will in the usual manner, and the ringing of the alarm o by means of the push-button 1 will be distinguished from the ringing thereof by means of our invention, because of the fact that a push-button is operated for a plurality of short intervals, whereas when our alarm device closes the circuit in which it is placed the ringing of the alarm e is continuous, and in this way the clerk or other party in charge of the office will be apprised of the fact that a fire is in the room connected with the said annunciator.
The back plate a of'our improved alarmoperating device is provided with a bracketarm or similar device *5, by which it may be connected with any suitable support in a room or compartment, and in Fig. 3 We have shown a modification in which two of the springs 6 are employed, the object of this construction being to insure a more even and accurate operation of the device, and by turning the screws a the distance between the plates (0 and a may be regulated, together with the tension of the springs Z), and this may be done with either form of construction shown.
This device may be used in hotels, department-houses. or any other buildings of this class, or wherever such devices are required, and our invention is not limited to any particular means of wiring a building; but one of the chief features of our improvement is that it may be applied to the wiring of any buildings of this class, as now practiced.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device of the class described, comprising two parallel members connected by two parallel devices which pass therethrough and from which one of said members is insulated, and a spring placed between said members and adapted to bear on each and from which one of said members is insulated by fusible material,substantially as shown and described.
2. A device of the class described, comprising two parallel members connected by parallel screws from which one of said members is insulated, and a spring placed between said members and adapted to bear on each and normally insulated from one of said members by fusible material, substantially as shown and described.
3. A device of the class described, comprising two parallel and connected members one of which is insulated from the connecting devices, and aspring placed between said members and adapted to bear on each and normally insulated from one of said members by fusible material, said members being also adjustable toward and from each other so as to regulate the tension of the spring, substantially as shown and described.
