SPRING SEAT AND BACK FOR CANE FURNITURE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTON SoDELMAYnn, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Schwabisch-Gmiind, in the Kingdom of Wurttemberg, Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Seat-s and Backs for Cane Furniture; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an improvement in the ordinary cane furniture which, for instance, is made of ratan and the like, and the improvement is more particularly adapted for chairs, settles, sofas and like furniture.

The improvement consists in the seat and back support being springy or resilient, so that, for instance, a cane chair resembles a cushioned chair. For this object the back and the seat is provided with a separate spring arrangement which consists of elastic springs, which are attached to a bar, board or the like, which rests on supports, and are firmly interwoven with the seat, or are made removable.

By the use of removable supports for the bars it is possible to provide already finished cane furniture with springs, and in order to be able to use the same support-s for various thicknesses of cane employed, the yokes engaging over the cane are displaceably arranged in the support-s.

The invention will now be more particularly described in some examples of construction, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing how the improvement is employed, for instance, in a ratan cane seat; Fig. 2 is a front view, partly in section, of the springs; Fig. 3 is a plan view with the holding band partially removed; and Fig. 4 represents a lateral section.

consist of spiral springs d which are attached to a bar 6. One end of the springs (Z is preferably wound into a corrugated wire j and also held by clamps 9, but the attachment may be any other suitable one, while the upper ends of the springs d are held by laces or a band or straps h or the like, which is attached to the bar 6 (Figs. 2 and 3) The bar 6 is carried by U-shaped curved supports 2', the ends 70 of the support 2' being interwoven with the cane or core 1 of the seat 6 (Figs. 1 and 1). By this means a firm and invisible attachment of the support 2' carrying the springs is obtained. The shape of the bar 6 and of the support '5 may of course be any suitable one, and any suitable number of springs 61 may be employed.

I declare that what I claim is 1. In ratan-core furniture, the combination of side cores of the furniture; supports each having a U-shaped intermediate part and horizontally extended ends extending longitudinally flat against a side face of said cores and secured thereto, the U-shaped part pending therefrom; a bar resting in said U-shaped part; a ratan seat woven between said side cores and around said cores and said extended ends; and springs on said bar and pressing against said woven seat.

In ratan-core furniture, the combination, with the woven seat and the side cores of the furniture, of a bar below said cores, U-shaped supports receiving the ends of the bar, each support having its ends secured to and extended along said cores, the strands of the woven seat being wound around said cores and the extended ends, whereby the supports for the bar are interwoven into the woven work of the furniture,

and springs on said bar and pressing against said woven seat.
