ir operating as a seal; to successfully conceal the inechanical parts of the device; to insure a 5 perfectly operating means for retaining the f parts in inoperative position; and to attain the enumerated ends by a simple, ornamental, conveinent, and inexpensive structure.
In the accompanying drawings which,
form a part of this specification, Figures 1,
2, and 3 are front, side, and bottom plan views respectively of a combined seal and cigar cutter embodying my invention, Fig. 4, a section on line :e of Fig. 2, showing the parts closed, Fi 5, a similar view of 3 the same, showing t e parts in open posii tion, Fig. 6, a section on line y y of Fig. 1,
t ra
throughout the views.
Fics. 7 and 8, a front elevation and a cen- [i vertical section respectively of the seal and slide member, and Fig. 9, a front elevation of a modified form of my invention. g Like reference letters indicate like parts My novel device comprises a body or casl ing A consistiii in the present instance of upwardly tapering front and back plates a, j
connected face to face by rivets b or other fastening means. One or bot-h the plates a is provided with a vertically disposed shal` low recess C preferably of reduced breadth in its upper portion, as at c. Opening into the recess C at each side of its lower portion is a cavity d into which opens in turn an upwardly inclined channel or groove e.
Soldered or otherwise connected with the upper extremities of the plates a is a loop l in which is a suspension rin F adapted to he engaged with a chain ob or other article. l`he parts E and I" herein shown are merely typical as any other well known suspension connection ma be employed.
pin or rivet G is fixe( in an intermediato portion of the plates a assing centrally and transversely ti'ougli tie lower portion of the recess c. This pin serves as a stop,
5 and the same may if preferred be made in- 1 tegral with one of the plates a..
Slidably mounted in the casing A is a vertical slide II comprising preferably a broad lower portion li. and a narrow upper portion if. The, portion /i is provided with ateral notches j, and above the plane of the notches, with an owning l( whose lower portion is bounded )y an augularly shaped or disposed beveled shearing edge la. 'lhe retracted portion of the slide is provided with an oblong vertical slot l through which loosely passes the stop (i.
Integral with or fixed to the bottoni of the slide ll is a solid block M of greater length (longitudinal dimensions) than the breadth of the plates a, and against the lower faces of the. latter the block M is adapted to abut. The lower face N of the block is the operating face or seal impressing surface.
fhe plates a are, near their bottoni portions, provided with circular openings t) adapted to receive the end of the cigar to be operated upon.
Normally the )arts are, as shown in Fig. 4, retained in cosed position h v yielding iiieiiihers or flat springs P whose lower portions ai'e snugly fixed in the channels n, and whose upper portions [i are free to move in cavities d, and are outwardly curved or arcuate to register in the ctuved notches j in the slide II. To operate the device the body M of the seal member is outwardly pulled manually to the position shown in Fig. 5. The cigar tip is then thrust through the openings O and K, and then the member M is pushed back to original position, such motion shearing the cigar tip by means of the edge lc.
The face of the seal may he plain as shown in Fig. 3; or it may be engraved or otherwise oriianiented as with a stone N',
as shown in Fig. 9.
1. In a device of the type set forth, the combination with a casing provided with openings through its opposite walls, of a loop upon the top of the casing. a pin in the casing above the openings, a body in coutuet with the, bottom of the easing, a plaie upon the body slidably mounted in the easing provided with an oblong slot in which the iin registers and provided with an opening ielow the slot, said plate having notches, means on the casing engaging said notches.l and a cutting edge upon the plate at the bottoni of the opening in operative relation with the openings in the casing.
2. In a device of the type set forth. the combination of a casing irovded with openings in its opposite wal s in alneinent with each other, a body, a plate upon thi body slldably mounted in the casing pro vided with iin opening adopted to copernti` ith the tiist. mentioned openings, siiiil phite having;` notched edges, rind means on f the inning eiigiiging the notehes of the plate, g :in :ingiitiii` cutting edge at the tinge of the i opening, :ind means for limiting theti'iivet of the Hide.
