NATHAN MNUSKIN, OF SAN PEDRO, CALIFORNIA.
REMOVABLE-COIL BED-SPRING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 29, 1911.
Patented Dec. 5, 1911. Serial No. 641,337.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN MNUSKIN, a subject of Russia, residing at San Pedro, California, have invented a new and useful Removable-Coil Bed-Spring, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to a new and improved construction in springs of the class ordinarily used for beds, couches, and in upholstering.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable spring composed of any desired number of coils, any one of which may be readily removed and replaced when desired.
The various features of the invention are herein fully described and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a bed spring. Fig. 2 is an inside view of a spring holder. Fig. 3 is an outside view of the same holder. Fig. 4. is a side view of one of the coils attached t.) the top and bottom holders.
In the several views like characters refer to like parts.
Referring to the details of construction: 1 is a coil spring similar to the ordinary coil spring. At the top and bottom of the spring the wire is formed in a ring and the end of the wire shaped into an eye 2. This eye is made large enough to slide freely along the wire which itencircles. In this way a ring is formed which may be expanded by sliding the eye along the wire as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2.
The holder provided for securing the spring consists of radial arms 3, of which four are shown, connected at the center and having lugs 4 formed on the ends of each, equidistant from the center, with openings 5 to receive the longitudinal and transverse wires 6 and 7 respectively. Lips 8 are formed on the lugs for retaining the expandible rings formed on the coil springs.
9 is the outer frame to which the transverse and longitudinal wires are attached after the usual fashion,
The use and operation of my device is as follows: Top and bottom frames of the gen- 6 and 7 are stretched from side to side and from end to end with both wires at each intersection threaded through the lugs 4:. After the holders are thus secured in place in each frame the rings on the end of the springs are expanded enough to allow them to pass over the lips 8 after which the. ring is released and closes against the lugs 4. When the coils are all thus secured to the holders in one frame the other is placed on top of coils and secured in like manner.
When desired a single spring may be detached and removed without disturbing the others by expanding the rings on the two ends and lifting over the lips 8; at other times the two ends of each coil are firmly held in lips.
each other at right angles and the arms of the holder are likewise placed at right an- If more wires are used in such mangles. V ner that three or more intersect at each crossing the arms are varied accordingly and their direction made to correspond with that of the wires.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
In a device of the character described: top and bottom frames; cross wires stretched between the sides and the ends of said frames; holders attached to the cross wires at each intersection, provided with lugs and lips; a plurality of coil springs adapted to be retained between said holders; and expandible rings formed on the two ends of each coil adapted to engage the lugs on the said holders.
NATHAN MNUSKIN.
