DEVICE FOR ASSEMBLING FILLERS FOR COMPOUND PLUMES.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE W. Mooi-I, a
lcitizen of the United States, residing at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Device for Assembling Fillers for Compound Plumes, of which the following is a specification.
A compound plume is composed of a plurality of superposed separate plumes united at their stems so that the product presents a rich appearance of great fullness.
The object of the invention is to permit- `the fillers between the top and bottom plumes to be formed of a number of short plume sections or fragments which though not constituting waste, have herebefore not been available in the manufacture of a compound plume. In this way the cost of the latter is greatly reduced without in any way impairing its strength or the beauty of its appearance.

From a base plate 10 projects upwardly two parallel rows of pins or pegs 11, said rows being placed in such close proximity as to accommodate the stem 13 of a filler 12 between them. The length of each row corresponds substantially to the length of the largest plume to be made.
Upon plate 10 is adapted to be supported the lower member 14C of a clamp, the upper member 15 of which is a substantial duplicate of the lower member and is adapted to be removably attached thereto by a number of spring buttons or clasps 16. These buttons are preferably located near the corners of the clamp and along its longitudinal sides. Each clamp member is made of oblong form and provided with a central longitudinal slot 17 adapted to accommodate both lrows of pins 11. Along their inner faces, members 14, 15 have preferably a Specicaton of Letters Patent.

sand paper or similar rough finish or lining 18 which is adapted to assist in holding the plume-sections in place by frictional contact. To facilitate the operation of the clamp, particularly after removal from the base plate 10, and while the plume sections are sewn together, as hereinafter pointed out, the clamp members 14, 15 should be made of a flexible and light material, such 'as card board or the like. Upon the face of base plate 10 are marked by scores or otherwise a plurality of gage lines 19 which are equally spaced from the pins and assist in the selection of feather fragments corresponding' in barb length to that of the compound plume to be made.
In use, bottom plate 14- is properly positioned on base plate 10, a number' of feather fragments are placed alongside each other with their stems accommodated between the pin-rows, while their barbs extend laterally through the interstices between the pins to be gaged by lines 19. After the sections of' the bottom filler layer have thus been assembled, any suitable number of additional similar layers are superposed, care being taken that the joints between the short stems of any one layer break line with those of the other layers. When the filler has acquired the desired thickness, upper member 15 is superposed and clamped to the lower member 14, by spring buttons 16, such attachment being made feasible owing to the resilient nature of the clamp members. The locked clamp which will now securely hold all the filling fragments in position, is now raised off base plate 10 and transferred to a zig-zag sewing machine, the needle of which passes through slots 17. In this way the thread 20 will firmly unite the stems of all the feather fragments, so that the lat-ter form a multiplex filler which is adapted to be subsequently flanked by a top and bottom feather thereby jointly forming the compound plume desired.

A device of the character described, comprising a base plate provided with a pair of upwardly projecting pin rows, upper and lower clamp plates, each plate made of ieXible material and provided with a longitudinal slot extending approximately throughout machine for sewing the material clamped its length and such slots adapted to be vertitherebetween.
